AKAI APC 40 change LED-Ring config.
Posted on: 10.01.2010 by Verline Shippert
Hello everyone,

i've already searched for a while. But either I'm using the wrong Keywords or this questions is not answered yet.

I try to reconfig. the "track control" knobs on my APC40 in "ableton live". What i try to do is to link knob 1-4 to 3-band-eq + cutoff of 1 Audio and 5-8 to the same of 2 Audio. I am using the ordinary Midi learn function.

It works so far, but the LED-Rings 5 to 8 don't show anything.
Is there a way to configure the LED-Rings.

THX for your help

kentwist: Are you using dumb mode on your apc40?
I Havent really figured out what dump mode is, but I believe it's when you start ableton, then everything resetts. I'm guessing this si dumb mode, please correct me if I'm wrong

I'm doing that though, resetting through Ableton, but it sounds to me like you are mapping the same Midi out as the control. I had the same issue when doing that. The Midi out for the LED is different from what controls it. Did you check that?

Actually, I have one more issue that is still not resolved...

I am mapping all my knobs on the apc40 to a eq type of knob. The top 8 is mapped up correctly and is starting in the middle.

The 8 bottom of the knobs is always starting at point -10, of a scale of -10 being all the way left, 0 being middle, and 10 being all the way right. I really want the bottom knobs also to always start at position 0.

Anyone have tried this?

I Just figured it out now Thanks so much for the pictures, that helped alot!

I thought the Device mapping was the same for controlling and sending out light.. I dunno what I was believeing

Nice little thing to know while mapping LED knobs for the Midi Out:

Top 8 knobs, top left to bottom right:
Ch01.CC056 - Ch01.CC63
Bottom 8 knobs, top left to bottom right:
Ch01.CC024 - Ch01.CC031

Thanks for helping me on this.

I'm happy to help. And I don't believe s:mode is going to mind, since this thread is over a year old and this was his only post. :P

Also, embedded SC players in signatures aren't permitted. <.<

OP says Ableton Live, the first reply doesn't specify, and everyone else says Traktor. I'm confused here.
(And talk about reviving a dead thread. :U)

Anyway, this PDF provides information that all APC20/40 users should have handy: http://www.akaipro.com/extras/produc...ocol_rev_1.pdf

Page 11 and 12 have the information you need. If we are still talking about Traktor here, then the "Midi Range" of the output control you are looking for needs to be set to 3, for "Pan Style". I did this with my APC40 just now. Here's some screenshots of the settings in Traktor:

Like I wrote earlier, 3 is for Pan Style; 2 is for Volume Style; 1 is for Single; and 0 is off.

Quick example of the mixer section:

I mapped the top row of knobs to deck A, and the bottom to deck B. From left to right, they control the Filter, Low, Mid, and High. Deck B's High is on Pan Style, Mid is on Volume Style, Low is on Single, and the Filter is off.

Hope this helps. :U

If I remember correctly you have to add 8 to the CC value for output to the LED rings.
For instance, you have CC40 controlling highs, to map the LED ring map a midi out to CC48.

Hi Bartyboy, thanks for the tip, will definetly look into the bible. I am not new to mapping though, have figured out how to map the output button to red/green/blinking etc... But I can't really figure out what you have to send to the midi out to map the led on the knob, normally goes from 0-10 but I want it to start in the middle. 0-5 and 0-(-5). It doesn't seam to be that simple as the buttons. Anyone have some experience with this?

You need to also program the MIDI Out function. This is usually the same as the MIDI In but if your using Traktors default MIDI mapper then the LEARN function doesn't work for MIDI Out, you must enter it manually. MIDI Out functions are the LED feedback on all controllers. If you really want to get into making detailed custom mappings for any controller I would suggest picking up the Trakor Bible. It can be found at HTTP://www.TraktorBible.com

It covers everything and is written really well for someone who has never done MIDI mapping before and well worth the investment.
