Which type of gamepads have the most outputs?
Posted on: 12.04.2011 by Matha Obray
Hey DJTT

Im looking to do a custom midi fighter like controller. So i want at least 16 digital outputs and 4 analog. Does anyone know of any gamepads that can give that? links would be great.

Thanks

I've seen you mention the built-in USB hub in this thread, is that the thing in the middle? How can you daisy chain them together? What is the max amount of controllers you can chain together and still have software support? I am intrigued by this now...

The PS3 Dualshock six axis is perfect for Traktor. Im trying to map one right now. Most buttons are pressure sensitive too with quite good depth especially on the 2nd shoulder buttons.

Only problem is pairing it with lion on mac.

It's driving me insane. Keep getting a pop asking for a pairing code and it never works.

I'm using OSCulator for routing midi.

in most cases you have 10k linear thumbsticks (standard part) built in, which you might want to replace with exactly such faders.

Lads, sorry for asking such a Noob question here:

As for buttons, I understand that the arcade buttons are fairly simple to get.

However I just wondered.. what type faders and pots would you get to connect to it. I'm just imaging there must be so many different resitances etc?

I might be able to get some for free from my buddy lol and if i connect 2 of the pads together im guessing it doubles the output amount?

the 'thing' in the middle is a normal 2 port usb hub... it just happens to have some strange female connectors attached to it.

you've got two choices - you can either try and solder the other xbox pads directly to the hub (try and find the pin outs via google). The slightly easier option would be to attach the correct connectors to the other xbox pads so that you can plug them directly into the usb hub. I believe the hub is designed to take memory cards and other xbox peripherals - if you can find some of these peripherals on ebay for cheap, grab em and use the connectors.

yeah those ones on eBay should work. and glovepie will be the converter you use for multiple gamepads.

Now another question. For the HID-MIDI converting software...most of them can support more then one controller right?

But remember, if you will be using Junxion (mac ox), then is going to be problem with hatswitch (up, down, left, right). Search for a post in this community "Hatswitch mapping".

oh that's no problem. you need one with two joysticks (two faders per joystick) and 16 buttons which most of them have nowadays.

there are 16 on this one. up, down, left, right; 1, 2, 3, 4; start, select; R1, R2; L1, L2; and one under each joystick.

google or ebay dual shock usb gampad and you'll find what you're looking for. many for less than $10.

do you have any idea how many buttons and faders you need? that can go a long way in determining which gamepad to choose.

it's just a cheap brain. that's why they're so popular with modders. one can achieve the same result with many different brains, though.

i'm considering gamepads for the button pads because i'm intimidated by arduino.

That's the theory. The software conversion program is the key to doing that. Some programs allow several joysticks (Glovepie, Fergos etc.) but some only allow one (Rejoice).

I'm building something at the moment that will be using two PS2 joypads and several other components. Keep an eye out for other threads too. Everything I know about this stuff, I've picked up from the good people of this community .

The thing to look out for is the pcb inside the controller. Most of the older controllers have solid pcb's inside them, but some of the newer ones have flexible pcb's which are useless for soldering on to. The only way of finding this out is to either open the unit up or get one on a recommendation of one from someone else.

I've never used the XBox ones, but a lot of people have had a lot of success with them.

ah ok makes sense. are there any other gamepads that could work?
Arcelia Siebeneck
13.04.2011
yes and no... the cable is already usb; it's just the connector that's different.

all you need to do is chop the connector off and replace it with a standard male usb connector. I did it without even any soldering... just wrapped the 4 or so wires round each other then used electrical tape to keep it together.

if you're using more than one xbox pad you can solder the additional pads directly to the first xbox pads' internal usb hub which would be quite a neat solution.

xbox 1 pads are also a good choice... you get 6 analogues per pad plus a built in usb hub so you can daisy chain them together.
