multiple x-session pro
multiple x-session pro Posted on: 19.06.2012 by Buena Roth Hey all, I recently purchased 3 x-session pros to run with torq 2.0, with one central one as a mixer of sorts and the other two as fx controls. But when i plugged them all in and launched torq, only one at a time will work. Did I just waste money, or am I just missing something? | |
Buena Roth 23.06.2012 | Yes enigma is pretty straight forward, but the update for torq was buggy, and I had to work around lots of things to get them to work. As it is, torq doesn't even remember my mappings and I have to load them into each of the controllers every time I start. It's not that big of a deal though and really only adds like 2 minutes to my setup time. |
DJ MENSAH 23.06.2012 | Were they that hard to set-up? I mean, enigma is not user friendly but changeing message id's or simply channel should be straightforward once figured out. BTW: I managed to configure mine (on one of the presets) to crash traktor every time. |
Buena Roth 23.06.2012 | After putting in hours and hours of work last evening , I got everything sorted, and I am now running all three perfectly with torq. I am gonna go look around at some thrift stores this weekend to find some arcade controllers, and hopefully the build will start in the next couple of weeks! |
Jonathan Chiuchiolo 22.06.2012 | I would return 2 of them as they aren't ideal controllers, if you want to mod your probably better off getting a korg nano kontrol 2 as it has leds that you can control with your software. Then just keep 1 x-session to play with until you finish modding (if you want more controls you can easily map shifts in both vdj and traktor). |
Buena Roth 22.06.2012 | Alrighty guys, I wanted to ask yalls opinion on what I should do with this. First off, I love torq, I've tried switching to vdj and traktor, but something just kept calling me back. Now I was really looking forward to this project, but these things are getting finicky. Now, keeping in mind I am low on funds, should I return these and get an xponent to run with torq, or should I keep these and switch to either traktor or vdj. Tomorrow is the last day I can return them, so I gotta figure something out soon. |
Jonathan Lokey 21.06.2012 | IM glad you managed to get it working, its good that another person has found out how flexible x-session pros can be! I just need to order some chroma caps for mine to stop the rotary knobs from felling toy like. |
Buena Roth 21.06.2012 | The build probably won't start for awhile, I've got other things to do. I also believe I might switch to traktor, as the update for torq is terrible and avid is most likely dropping it. Sad day. |
DJ MENSAH 21.06.2012 | Make sure you link build thread here. I found those devices to be a bit slow with analog controls. Is it only me? |
Buena Roth 21.06.2012 | Thanks for the help guys, figured it out! I'll post a build thread soon of when I rig these things together. |
Buena Roth 21.06.2012 | I figured out enigma, but it turns out I forgot to install the last torq update, silly me. Hopefully this will fix it. |
Jonathan Lokey 21.06.2012 | Which thread did you find for enigma? It definitely isn't easy to setup or explain and took me a while to figure it out. Each X-Session pro has control presets that are stored in the unit. You select a preset by using a paperclip to press the button on the back of the xsession labelled 'A' and then press one of the left transport buttons (play, cue, >>, <<). Did you do this after editing the presets in enigma? I have never used torq so don't know what its midi learn is like. |
Buena Roth 21.06.2012 | Anyone? Really need to figure this out. |
Buena Roth 20.06.2012 | Alright well I found a thread describing how to use enigma, and I've changed the channels on the two I'm messing with to try and get it working, but torq will still only take signal from one at a time. I even found two presets with completeley different cc messages then changed the channel on them and still nothing. I'm only able to get signal from one at a time, so i can deactivate one and use the other but that defeats the purpose. Does anyone believe there's a way to do this, or should I just return them? Really don't wanna have to do that, I had high hopes of this turning into a good project, building custom cases and adding arcade buttons and what not, but this has to be figured out in the next two days or I will run out of time to return them. |
Leota Dolney 21.06.2012 | I changed the MIDI channel on my X-Session Pro as it was conflicting with messages from another device. It can be done, but I found it to be a pain. Check the M-Audio website. You have to use a paperclip to push a button on the back while pressing one of the front buttons. Each of the buttons on the front corresponds to a different MIDI channel...check the documentation. However, the X-Session Pro has different "configurations" built in for each of those channels, so you have to change the the buttons behave (toggle vs. momentary, range of values for faders and knobs etc.) using a piece of software from the M-Audio website (Windows only...sorry no OSX for this). Surprisingly, for what looks like a toy device, the X-Session Pro has a lot of different parameters that can be changed. Once you have a configuration done for the MIDI channel you want, you "download" to the device and then reset it and select the appropriate MIDI channel. Like I said, it can be done, but it is a pain. |
Buena Roth 21.06.2012 | Hey timmyboy, could you help me out with enigma? None of it makes sense to me! |
Jonathan Chiuchiolo 20.06.2012 | it'll still be a while away as it's not in beta yet, but the the longer we wait the better it'll be on release. |
Buena Roth 20.06.2012 | Haha, well with torq dying out I'll definitely be watching for vdj 8, but for now i'll mess around with that enigma program, thanks timmyboy. |
Natalia Bucko 20.06.2012 | Yeah i know, it looks like it. You've single-handedly got me early awaiting 8 and even tailoring my gear-buying for the next few months to allow the possibility of switching. |
Jonathan Chiuchiolo 20.06.2012 | cause it can I'm a fanboy, but only because I know what's possible... it's a lot, and it'll be a lot more in version 8 |
Natalia Bucko 20.06.2012 | haha synthet1c... every post. "VDJ can do that!" |
Jonathan Lokey 20.06.2012 | I run 2 xsessions in ableton. You can download a special bit of software that allows you to change the midi notes on the xsession pro when you turn the controller on. The software is called enigma http://www.m-audio.com/news/en_us-142.html. |
Jonathan Chiuchiolo 19.06.2012 | I use vdj so don't really use that sort of software, but bome's midi translator get thrown around a lot in these circumstances, there is a thread at the top of the controller community with all of them listed. |
Buena Roth 19.06.2012 | [QUOTE=synthet1c;492988]although you could maybe route the midi messages through some middleware and change them QUOTE] Do you know of any programs to do this, kind of like an asio4all for midi controllers i guess? |
Jonathan Chiuchiolo 19.06.2012 | in VDJ you can run multiple duplicate devices in parallel all sending the same midi signals on the same channels, if your not able to modify the midi messages on the x-session that may be the only way to utilize all the controllers at the same time, although you could maybe route the midi messages through some middleware and change them in that before they reach torq. |
Yong Aptekar 19.06.2012 | I don't know about torque, but if you can change the channel that each controller operates on, it might work. Remember that every knob/button/fader outputs a midi command. All 3 xsessions will output the same cc or note, and because of this, only one will work at a time. If you can set 3 different channels though, you might be able to get them all going. For the $$ though, why don't you sell 2 and get an x1. More conducive to fX control. Just a suggestion. |
