New CHROMA CAPS colors?
Posted on: 30.05.2012 by Kathryne Mario
Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has heard any news or would like a bigger collection of colors for the CHROMA CAPS? I love the current collection they have, don't get me wrong...Its just that Red and Turquoise are my favorite colors and would look dope on my S4 and coming f1s.

Is there a way to mod these to paint over the current CHROMA CAPS?

would be cool to hear from others as well the type of colors scheme they would like to see...

When I rubber coated the previously RIT dyed knob, it did become a darker red but due to the RIT and not properly washing, it came out rigid.

The color kit for the rubber coating is quite vast in customizing. you could add alittle black into red and get that color.

the blue nobs and caps look great on my vci400ege, but they would look awesome with black lines
I agree, I have blue caps as well and I want to change those. I was believeing of using Brite-Mark H20 pens or if the vinyl dye works, I believe you can get them in pen form. Those should work for less of the work after dyeing

Not sure how well the rubbery coating on the knobs will hold the color though. You may end up with colored fingers after mixing with them lol. Let us know how it works out.

It would be cool to have custom colored knobs.
thanks for the tips man, I haven't really tried this RITT dyeing process so still kinda a green thumb. By Hot water, just hot tap water or should I boil the water and wait till it stops bubbling?

about the rubbery coating, I heard that sanding it with a fine grit will give the knobs and faders will give it a better hold. will that work? not sure what it will do to the texture of the knobs but I was pondering that as well.

Orange and red might be nice...but how about some Chroma Caps that fit pots with the "opposite" orientation like the Xone:K2? Or Chroma Caps WITHOUT the indicator line so we can use them on endless encoders?

One of the guys at the studio decided to give the RIT dye a stab,
however he left the cap in the container unattended overevening so the color is off in some spots.

he did prove that with enough TLC and lots of spare time, you can get a custom color from the RIT.

Ok I'm back, sorry for the delay. Just got my Chroma Caps on Friday and finally got some time yesterday to try this out.

After some research and talking to experts, I was advised not to use the RIT dye as it would not seep into the rubber. I wanted to confirm this so I bought 1 red pack of RIT so I don't waste my money and give this a try.

I left the Chroma Caps in for several hours, all with different temperatures and amount of RIT and the best result I got was a pale orange.

======= that being said, the RIT dye works with the Chroma caps but color isnt great. =========

I tried my alternative and I got a way better result, I used Rubber Coating.

Since I tried using Red RIT dye, I got the rubber coating in red so I could compare the two. After playing around with it when I finished the process, I found:

- It is extremely durable: If you push the rubber up on the finished one, It moves exactly like if you were pushing on a Stock CHROMA with no tear or break.

- Color is great: bright, glossy and no sign of fading when playing with.

- It feels great, just like a Chroma Cap. (I did put several coats on this test cap so it did smooth out a tiny bit of the grooves on the sides. To keep the grooves, use less coats. If you like alittle give then this might be an option to smooth out.)

I believe I am gonna stick with this Custom as I feel its the best solution and the color selection is limitless. I am making a Tutorial video for those interested in this custom. I hope to see some colorful controllers and mixers out there.

here is a comparison pic to show you my results:

Cheers!

Ok so DJTT have sent my order and the extra knobs should be here shortly!

My friend who does car interiors mentioned that vinyl dye might work on the faders and knobs. He gave me some paint to do the synthetic leather on my headphones. What the vinyl dye does is it seeps into the material so that it bonds better from what I read, might be a good alternative if the RITT dye doesn't work or bleeds into my fingers!

If anyone has tried this or knows about this process, I'd like to hear about it!

Water temp you will just need to experiment with. I would say a bit hotter than most taps put out but not close to boiling. Start with the tap and go up from there. Not sure how well the rubbery coating will take the dye though as the parts I dyed were hard plastic.

If you try some sandpaper on them use a super fine grit like 800-1000 or you'll probably just sand off the coating or scratch it up.

Best bet is to just try dying one first and see if it takes the dye.

the 2 layers of plastic/rubber should be bonded well enough together that boiling won't be a problem. I'm excited to see if this works as well as with skate wheels.

sweet! cant wait!

just ordered some white ones to play around with this mod. I got some royal blue and kelly green RIT dye to make turquoise as I have a project with some crapped out headphones I wanna do...so I will try out this dyeing.

I just hope boiling the caps won't alter the caps though. I'll post pics when I get em!

This is the color I'm gonna try.

I haven't tried this, maybe if someone has an extra they can try, but I've done this with skateboard wheels.
RITT dye + white caps = any colour the dye comes in. Boil water, put in the dye, put in the caps, stir, taste, and dry.
