Upcoming controllers!
Posted on: 15.05.2012 by Cathi Bannasch
Whats up guys,
Im kind of bored right now and was just researching some upcoming controllers. After doing that I can only believe of one thing to say. Its going to be an awesome next couple of months. I just sold my VCI-400 and it freed some capital, so I am interested in obtaining a new controller.

Anyways, enough about me. I wanted to know about the gear you guys are most excited about. Here is my list.

1. CDMP-7000. I feel like this has a lot of promise. I have always wanted to CDJ, but being a poor ass college kid can't exactly afford CDJ2ks. I know Gemini isn't regarded as having that awesome build but its a cool idea for $1000. Link here. http://www.geminidj.com/cdmp-7000

2. VCI-380. No need to explain. We all know it will be the next controller. Its only potential downfall is that its 2 channels. Which to me is awesome cause I bought a VCI 100 a couple weeks back just cause it was 2 channel. This controllers potential is going to be crazy.

Those are the only two I have been anticipating. What are you all looking forward to in the next couple months.

P.S. anyone want to guess the dates of release for the two products mentioned above?

I can confirm this. Behringer DJX700 has been the worst mixer I've ever had/used, it was total crap. It got broken after 5 *minutes* of use (channels started leaking to cue/headphones, noise/crackling from the channel faders, etc), and after getting a new one from warranty it lasted around one day before the same symptoms started again.. also the curves of the faders/knobs were really bad. I don't even have to mention the effects.. All in all it was a really crappy mixer. 7+ year old Gemini was much better than DJX700.

Gemini's CD players have always had pretty decent transports even down to the CDJ500 clone years back...sure I wouldn't use them for a club installation, but for home use (their intended market TBH) - 100% yes.
I agree. I want to have something at home to use to work on sets without having to shell out the massive $$$ for a set of Pioneers. Maybe these wouldn't hold up to the abuse of a club environment...but I don't care as I wouldn't be using them in a club anyway. I believe the home market, or possibly a mobile setup is the appropriate market for these. Now, resale value may be crap compared to Pioneer and that is something to consider...

it seems that you are looking for a scapegoat as to why you are getting bored, no one says you cant use your ears when mixing with a laptop, and no one says you have to use effects on every mix just because they are there. they are "tools" not "rules"... write that down lmao

Personally I don't believe I'd ever buy a Gemini product hardly see them around when it comes to DJing. The CDJ 700 looks really toy like in my opinion. If you really wanna transition into cdjs & mixer. I'd say pick up some NDX400s and a second hand Behringer DJX700 from like ebay. It would be an affordable setup and you can test it out and see how you enjoy it. If you feel like that's a better setup then you know you would wanna spring for something better.

I believe the gemini 700 looks like a CDJ 2000 copy cat for a fraction of the price. Can't beat that, id wait and check reviews and stuff though when they have been out for a bit.

IMHO Honetly I can't say the 700 looks like a toy, in essence its got most of the good bits (apart from reckordbox/bigger screen) + few more toys added in from a CDJ900

Lets see its got:

Midi.
decent jog wheel
touchscreen FX/Waveforms/track selection.
slip mode
Quantized looping

Thats far cry from a NDX400 the 850's will be around $500 per pair more expensive and you'll lose features like quantize, and slip mode. The 900's closer to $1000 extra for the pair - thats quite a bit of cash.

Gemini's CD players have always had pretty decent transports even down to the CDJ500 clone years back...sure I wouldn't use them for a club installation, but for home use (their intended market TBH) - 100% yes.

the vci 380 is making me believe about changing to serato. I'm believeing that with 2 TT's and a serato box may be my ideal setup. I mean you have an amazing analog mixer and known crossfader for scratching and it saves on space. Then i have a mobile setup for smaller gigs/parties and still get to use TT's.

But getting all that track information from traktor to serato could be a pain. Basically if I make the change I am going to be on serato for a long time.

I just don't see anyone making a mapping to compare to the vci-380...especially one that will work flawlessly out of the box like the itch mappings do.

I honestly believe the vci-380 out does 2 cdj 2000's for half the price and a mixer.

If you save up a few quid, refurb CDJ-900s are ~$900, and 850s are around $750. It depends on how much you want to save, but they'll definitely provide a much tighter feeling all around.

I was also looking at a DJM-950, but its two deck, and I would like to be able to plug an ipod into the mixer just in case. However, what I am getting at is that for about $1800 I can get two CDjs and a solid mixer. One thing is keeping me worried though. The durability of the Gemini CDJ 700. I have never owned Gemini, but its rep is ehh... we all know. I really want to learn how to CDJ though. I am sick of these Kontrol S4, VCI, yadda yadda controllers. They are great dont get me wrong, but digital DJing is starting to bore me.

What would yall do. I believe the things you guys are mentioning are great. I am really taking each into consideration. Thanks

Have you looked into the pionner ddj-t1? It's a controller but it has most the same features as you would with two cdjs and a mixer.

It's not about being taken seriously it's about personal preference. If you notice a lot of the big time producers in the edm scence right now hardly actually spin on cdjs. Datsik has a launchpad and some other small controller. I mean it would be nice to have those to practice and see what you enjoy playing on more but really you will rarely have to take you stuff to a gig.

I am considering acquiring a pair of these for home. A great alternative to the Pioneers as I don't need Pioneers at home...plus they have nice benefit of being a controller too!

My list is simple:

1. Native Instruments Kontrol F1: I know some people have issues with the remix functionality being tied to the controller, but the remix decks should work well with my workflow

2. Behringer MM-1: I have a Xone:K2...but it just doesn't quite cut it for me as a stand-alone MIDI mixer...so I will likely use it for other stuff (e.g., control of 4 FX units + instant gratification mapping on the 4x4 button matrix). The MM-1 will be just that...just a MIDI mixer...nothing more and nothing less. I like that. I embrace the modular controller mindset because I want controllers that do One thing, but do it well. That way I can pick and choose which controllers work for my setup/workflow...and on that note...

3. Behringer PL-1: I don't really use jog-wheels for much, but I like the thought of an inexpensive controller that gives me that functionality. Will I use it all the time...NO. But I like the flexibility of having the option to use it when I want.

I read in at interview that James Holden was designing a controller. Haven't been able to find much/any information online about it so I'm guessing it won't be commercially available, but still I'm looking forward to seeing that.
