Launchpad LED problems??
Posted on: 27.08.2011 by Lizzie Hoesley
Mapped the LP to 4 decks in Traktor 2 Pro, 8 hotcues per deck, a play button per deck, beat jumps, and a couple other things, like loops activate on the scene launch buttons on the side.

Everything else (mixer/fx wise) I'm doing on a korg nanoKontrol.

Has anyone mapped a LaunchPad to Traktor? the LEDs get inverted sometimes, not sure why...

Sometimes they go away completely. I don't want to put masking tape on my buttons, that would be a shame since it has the LEDs as part of what makes the whole thing cool... And usable at evening ...

Is this some Automap stupidity? Has anyone had problems (or better luck with APC)?

Now I just need to find a good mapping or maybe use Midimasher or Katapult. I wonder if Midimasher is essentially a hands off Midi driver after the initial setup, or if I have to lauch/configure it each time before I start Traktor, any experience with this?
midikatapult is very good. i used that before writing midimasher. midimasher is the same as midikatapult in as far as it needs to be started each time u run traktor. tho it should be simple enough to make it auto run on login and run some default config or something. on windows it needs to be run after the virtual midi port app tho - so probably safer to just run it by hand. it doesn't matter whether you run it before or after traktor, so long as the virtual midiports are running first - tho if u run it before traktor midimasher will get the current 'out' states from traktor automatically. on mac and linux it is able to setup it's own virtual midi ports.

if i pull my finger out and release the next version of midimasher... it'll have a much simpler config format, more like vdjscript, tho u can still use LUA for more advanced stuff. the next version basically works - but i want to make some changes to the new script syntax that would be incompatible with how it is atm, so not releasing just yet.

I had the same issue with a Thinkpad T60 (Traktor Audio 6, Kontrol X1 and Launchpad, loopBe) and was about to return the Launchpad. But now I solved the problem : IIRC I first uninstalled the Novation software (Windows>System Settings>Programs, look for Novation) and then, today I unplugged all Midi devices and installed a new version of the Novation USB drivers (v2.33) and selected "Midi only device" in the installation dialog. After that I reconnected the Launchpad and let Windows finish its driver installation process. Then I reconnected all other Midi devices and started Traktor Pro. After that I had no Windows freeze any more when selecting Launchpad as Midi in and Midi out in Traktor Controller Manager. Hope this helps. afaik, because when I mapped it manually I set them all to channel 1.

The control is set to accept and send not to/from all, but specified as Launchpad (not specified as channel 1, but when I did midi learn from the LP they all came up channel 1)

I haven't tried to do it with no traktor output mappings (for LEDs) but I might for giggles... I'll make a new map from scratch on the laptop and see what happens - and if it works, I'll see if it crashes when I program an output to an LED... I'm not optimistic though :/

If I cut the output from traktor, then I can use it. But hard to navigate on a 8 page layout on 64 button grid (512 buttons in total) without any LED Feedback.
and u have the in and out ports set explicitly to the lp, no other tsi's sitting around using all-ports and no other devices/apps that could be affecting it somehow? shouldnt be able to connect any extra apps anyway to the lp ports if they're explicitely connected to the real lp ports.

the lp itself shouldnt be sending any data back just when it gets input over midi - but still sounds like a feedback loop

it just sounds like some kind of midi feedback loop to me which can very easily crash your system. had the same issue with some bad code in my own midimasher app the other week - so put in some extra code to drop events if it sees too many coming per second.

you 100% sure you have midi in/out devices set correctly? and no silly things like the all-ports option that traktor has etc?

Hmm... I might be wrong about "Ableton not requiring Automap". Although I've never experienced Ableton crashing because Automap was not running. So I'm off to do more research on this!

By the way, have you looked at your Ableton crash reports?

I found that changing my anti-virus/malware from COMODO's Internet Security to Microsoft's Security Essentials made my Ableton and Traktor stop crashing/freezing.

UNINTSTALLING!

I wonder if Automap is what killed my windows.... (win7 32bit on the laptop and whenever traktor, live, or automap opens (and the LEDs light up) the whole system crashes - mouse freezes, have to hard reset.... pita)
Did you resolve the freeze thing?
Mine freezes (whole computer) when I open Traktor, but I run Ableton without any flaws.

quick tests.... do crashes happen when you don't have any midi-out port set to the launchpad, i.e: to stop leds lighting up and then have u tried something like bomes midi keyboard that would let you route midi input from say a nanokey to the input of the lp. if u can do that does pressing keys on the nanokey make the leds light up on the lp without any issues...

Tested my launchpad with my wifes Lenovo t400 and my old HP.

Verdict:

T500: Instant crash
T400: Instant crash
HP: No problems

Looks like a conflict between Lenovo and launchpad.

A big reward to anyone who can advice me on how to get my setup working (I don't need an advice saying buy a new computer :-)

There are no crash reports - live doesn't crash, windows does

I wonder if I should save up for a new laptop... I'm getting used to the LP+nano... it's actually quite a nice combo (for anyone who doesn't use platters)

And it's not just killing my OS off the bat, but rather it waits. I can even open Traktor or Live with it, and it's fine - once it's time for some LEDs to light up, though, everything is just paralyzed. So dead it can't even create a crash report!

When you're looking at the MIDI settings of Traktor, if you see "Automap MIDI" under the In/Out port, you've got it installed. Or you could press the View/down arrow when the LP is connected.

OR, you could look in that damned start menu. :U

I don't believe I have automap installed.
I bought the launchpad used, and just downloaded the ver 2.2 driver from novation site.

How can I check if it is installed (in device manager it just shows launchpad under sound devices)

Ableton doesn't use Automap at all. It runs a different script for it. When the Launchpad being used by Ableton, Automap doesn't interface with the LP. People say you're supposed to press User 1 & 2 + Mixer + the down arrow buttons to switch between Ableton and Automap, but I found out that it works with User 2 + the down arrow.

installs with the drivers i believe - not 100% sure. you'll see an "Automap MIDI" or something like that in your devices. i uninstalled mine. could be that automap was a separate download so maybe u dont have it installed. there's an automap app too - so see if u have that maybe.

the launchpad needs drivers but unistalling automap won't remove that.

i can see how automap is useful for controllers like the nocturn where it actually does something but not sure about the lp - or at least the lp with traktor. not needed with ableton too tho from what i can tell, tho i do use an old version of live5 mostly which predates the lp.

yup - no need for automap that i'm aware of unless u need some features of automap. you just refer to the launchpad pads by their own note numbers.

this is the config file i use which might or might not help http://djism.com/lua/launchpad.lua tho with midi learn in traktor you'll see what the note numbers are anyway ofc.

i haven't played with automap too much so not sure what that gives you over just mapping direct to the lp.

never had those issues with my launchpad but i don't use automap. are you using some functionality from automap that you actually need? i've only used the lp connected directly with traktor, via midikatapult or my own midimasher app.
