Value added tax (VAT) - Europe

Value added tax (VAT) - Europe
Posted on: 16.12.2011 by Kirk Patil
I want too buy my DJ gear from the U.S because it's cheaper + with the shipping you still save money but then i stumbled upon Value added tax (VAT) If i'm not wrong you always have to pay for this when people ship you stuff from the U.S to Europe and that can be alot if you buy products with high prices.

Let's say if i buy the "S2 CONTROLLERIST ESSENTIALS BUNDLE" which costs $750 and i live in The Netherlands where the VAT is 19% BTW standard =

Original Amount: $750.00
Tax Amount: $142.50
Total + Tax: $892.50

And you also have to pay for the shipping right? Am i doing this right or not? Can someone please explain how this works.

Thanks

In Germany (and things seem to be similar in many other EU countries), you pay the VAT on

the value of the goods
+
tariff (if applicable)
+
excise tax (if applicable; there's no excise tax on electronics)
+
shipping costs

In particular, note the following: (i) you didn't factor in that you'll have to pay tariffs; and (ii) the 19% VAT is levied not on the goods price but on the goods price plus other stuff (notably, shipping and tariffs).

Also, don't forget about potential warranty issues when buying from abroad.
