Anyone else irritated by this? Posted on: 30.05.2012 by Jeramy Bajraktarevic So does anyone else become livid when someone says that every bit of electronic dance music is "techno"? or am I just a pretentious arse? I noticed this as soon as more people got into dubstep and hard electro. I seem to recall a particular conversation with someone who was a self proclaimed electronic music guru in which he stated, and I quote: "Dubstep is just electro at 70 BPM. They're both just a form of techno." Like I said, maybe I'm just being egotistic here but I just figured someone else may share my feeling on this subject. | |

Julius Schoenhofer 01.06.2012 | Hardly irritates me when people mislabel genres, but it sure does immediately erase 98% of that person's musical credibility in my eyes. I've heard it all. People who call every form of dance music dubstep. People who use "dub" to refer to "dubstep" without realizing dub is a completely different genre. And yes, I've heard "techno" used as a blanket term for all electronic music. |
Jona Slon 01.06.2012 | Oh this really grinds my gears trust me at the local evening club here there is a "Techno Room" and all they play is ministry of sound pop tunes (nothing wrong with that but seriously that isn't techno ffs. What really surprised me was a friend of mine who really has no idea about music said "I don't believe they've ever played a techno song in there" if he can notice it then the club has to step up and change it in my view. |

It isn't what they really enjoy, but is always nice when they will let me play what ever for a bit at work. |
Len Lukawski 31.05.2012 | The only true house music records are the ones that say "house music" all the way through the record. If you're lucky you can find a few that talk about Jack being in the beginning and all that. Everything else is just breakdancing music. |
Celestine Porebski 31.05.2012 | I would never classify the original version of Man With The Red Face as house. Clearly techno. The difference is in the drum groove (rule of thumb: more emphasis on the snare in house music as opposed to techno). |
Kayleigh Malpartida 31.05.2012 | Yeah that Garnier track is a good example, BUT what a weird unsettling drone. I believe most people would agree that House is real happy. And to me I believe the layered percussion sets all house apart from other genres |

Fredda Klarman 31.05.2012 | When I hear techno, I believe Detroit. Generally dark, repetitive, industrial. A bit rough, but not always. Stable, droning, hypnotizing. It's a tough genre to describe, but an easy genre to point out. When you say 90's euro stuff, I believe of a techno/house mesh. It's got more of a pop edge. I'd call it more of a club pop than techno. This is just what I believe, though. |
Emory Car 31.05.2012 | I'm surprized, thanks! |
Kayleigh Malpartida 31.05.2012 | When I was a kid I always considered the likes of Fatboy Slim to be House. It really is bandied around a lot now. What do you guys consider it to be? When I hear someone mention techno the mental image that I conjure up is balls out 90's Euro stuff |
Leeanna Ayla 31.05.2012 | It's not like they are trying to defy some rule about what is and what isn't a certain genre, they just don't know. |
Fredda Klarman 31.05.2012 | @xone: I agree 100%. I flipped mtv on for a little while over the weekend and saw a music video ad thing at the end of the show. Under it said something along the lines of top house 2012/vote for favorite house track 2012. This was the "house". |
Romelia Stankard 31.05.2012 | I get more annoyed with what people are calling house music to be honest. People have always misused the word techno but it's getting kind of ridiculous the stuff people call house music these days. |
