Can you recommend me a 4 IN/4 OUT USB or FW soundcard
Posted on: 14.04.2013 by Nereida Jasnoch
Hi,

I'm really in need of a soundcard. My monitors are directly hooked up to my laptop at the moment.
(Yes I get crackling/static occasionally)

This is what the soundcard should be able to do:

In the studio:
-Something decent to hook my monitors up to (they use RCA)
-Easy to reach knobs for output volume/gain
-Need to be able to plug in a mic
-Headphone out would be nice

DJ setup:
-1 input for recording the mix
-1 input for a send/return
-1 output for a send/return
(send/return probably with Xone 92, but that's for the future)
-1 output to go to a mixer channel
-another output to route maschine on would be nice but not required.

I asked an ableton instructor what he would recommend and he said I was a fool if I didn't get FireWire, but I believe I'm going to go for a USB interface to keep the cost down.

I really have no idea what I should pick.

You have to be very harsh to criticise the Audio 2 even if it is made of plastic and as small as pack of cards.

Is the 10th out yet? I can't find a price.
But it DOES use headphone out as a main output, was my point

I believe the 10tion is an old product, discontinued now.

Tell that to Native Instruments with the ridiculous Audio 2 :P

With that said, the 10tion is pretty shit lol.

Very true. I should have said 'Audio 4'. He will find it easier to get an Audio 4 on it's own.

You should make a trade thread in the Buy & Sell community .
Although, you might struggle because the TA6 is sold as a package with software and they cannot be split. You should probably look for an 'Audio 6', the older version of the TA6. The Audio 6 was sold separately from software.

USB 2.0 is perfectly fine for any typical DJ setup. Even with 4 stereo ins and outs at 24bit/96kHz you are still not even close to saturating the USB 2.0 port bandwidth.

Would the USB 2.0 on the komplete audio struggle with 4 things coming in on quarter inch and 4 things going out on quarter inch all at the same time ?

I've heard that 2.0 is just fine up until you start sending more than 2 or 3 things around.

The Audio 2 is a great little card. 2 hybrid line/headphone outs, gain dials for each, decent sound quality, and way more volume than you'd ever need.

And its name isn't based on how many mono outputs it has..

All audio is in general less "risky" on Macs if they are class-compliant.

The focusrite is pretty cool because it has a FW port and comes with FW to thunderbolt cable. And I like the complete audio because of it's sturdy case.

What OS are you using?

If it's Windows, be careful with the Focusrite - I've had nothing but trouble with mine.
Works fine on my macbook though.

For your DJing setup, an Audio 8 DJ would be ideal as it gives plenty of inputs and outputs.

Since you're using a Xone 92 you cannot make use of the digital outs of the Komplete Audio 6, so that leaves you with only 2 stereo outputs. The Audio 8 DJ on the other hand has 4 stereo outputs, in addition to meeting all your studio requirements.

Only problem is it's discontinued so you'd have to buy one used.

Edit: The Saffire Pro 24 would also fit nicely; it has Firewire and a volume dial for your monitors.
