Slipstreamed windows ISOs optimized for djing ?
Posted on: 20.04.2013 by Dannie Dimora
Hello there, i've been having problems with my laptop ever since i bought a brand new hdd and installed a fresh copy of windows 7.
Waveforms are sluggish in both serato and traktor (vdj works fine tho), and traktor is MIGHTY slow. It takes about 10 seconds to get into the settings menu, let alone browsing and loading tracks.
Serato also crashes when i load some of the tracks, and i have these weird cpu spikes when doing absolutely nothing.

My specs are: quadcore i7 (2ndgen) @2ghz, 8gb ram @1333, WD caviar black 7200rpm 750gb, nvidia gt540m 2gb.
OS: Win7 Ultimate x64 (genuine), followed every optimization guide out there.
The disk is defragmented every week by a good third party defragger, i have about 180gb used on the disk, now this is only music, on the laptop i have installed just serato, traktor, vdj, chrome, itunes and the defragger. NOTHING ELSE.

TL;DR
So if any of you know of any slipstreamed installs of windows 7 that are specifically targeted at and optimized for music production/djing, that would be GREAT.

Thank you
Luka

EDIT:
-also, "get a mac" , yeah i would, i'm just waiting for the next-gen retinas to come out because the 15 has an overheating issue.

USB ports are cool, no dropouts, i guess it's an OS problem..
HD is squeaky clean , defragmented and has 500gb free.
I'm actually a quite active member on tomshw, i'll try asking those guys (even tho most of them probably don't have experiences with djing software..)

But for what its worth you could try Memtest86 for the memory, Prime95's torture test for a combo of both, and whatever WD tools are available for the drive. But again, this may be a waste of time and it doesn't sound like a direct hardware issue.

There's a reason every dj who is apparently "Worth their salt" uses a mac, not because the hardware is any better, but the software has been designed around the BSD operating system. As for your question about slipstreamed windows ISO's, i highly recommend using a pretty common digital platform known as the Pioneer CDJ range. Works best with just taking flash drives and cd's to gigs. less hassle to setup and typically, crash free!
Yeah OS optimization seems to be the problem, but still, i would understand it not working properly on a c2d, but on an i7?

Also, answering the slipstreaming question with "buy cdjs" doesn't help me a lot now does it
I don't have money to buy 2000's or 900's, and i wouldn't settle for less because of the low feature count on more basic models (call me snob, but IMO my ddj-sx has more features than a pair of 850ks)
Serato and traktor have everything i need, but damn the programmers -.-

+1 latencymon

for me the three biggest culprits have been:
- battery management driver (ndis.sys)
- wifi (acpi.sys)
- nvidia gfx

regarding the nvidia gfx, google powermizer and d/l a script to disable it

with Serato check you don't have any virtual midi stuff running like midiyoke for instance

also gamebooster and the djtt script are good to get rid of unwanted services

Honestly I have seen clean installs fuck up like this. And if you've been in your case an improperly seated piece of hardware can cause this also... And sorry an i7 is great but if the software is not working with the instruction set correctly this can cause problems... Try running throttle stop conservatively ad see what happens. Also what about heat? Have you installed any other audio programs. On my laptop for some reason I can not have Ableton installed with certain vsti's or it fucks up my serato. And trust me my laptop is anything but under powered. Ic2 x9100 8gb DDR3 Dual ssd drives and a nvidia graphics card before the gimped their mobile cards. So yeah could be something like that cause issues.

Just had to point that out - you can ignore the peaks when starting up ssl/traktor... you're hitting the harddrive quite a bit then.
Interrupts will never show a thread - they'll be a mix of what's coming from the hardware and to some extent dpc calls. Some precision logging and analysis with xperf will help pinpoint where the dpc latency surges are coming from. Who knows, you might actually have to *downgrade* a driver, but only after looking at that will you be able to know specifically which part is going amok. If it's in usbport.sys however... that's a bit more problematic.

Tried a different usb cable and/or port for the audio interface(s) maybe?

Re: tweaking - it's probably a better idea to do a clean install, add the essential components, do some basic setup (most significantly, a competent power profile) *then* run dpclat/latencymon/xperf/rattv3 (on xp) and such to track performance while idle and under your expected workload.
At this point you still have a relatively untainted system and whatever arises can be tracked down easier.
Now you can tweak subtly, ie no agressively mucking about with services and registry tweaks, then start adding less essential packages to your machine and see how that goes.

DDPC latency...try installing different GFX drivers. Perhaps your computer manufacturer releases OEM ones or you could try some older drivers. I had this problem with my nVidia chipset on my old laptop.

Cpu speed isn't as important as instructions per clock, and i7s have very good ratios. Plus it's a quad core, so it really shouldn't be a problem. For example i run cubase with 50+tracks no problem on this...

Removed the battery, nothing changed...
