Should the term DJ be changed?
Posted on: 25.04.2013 by Cindi Stolzenbach
In the early '90s I mixed with turntables and records, now I mix with media players and USB thumb drives. Am I still a Disc Jockey?

I originally posted this on my facebook profile and one response said "LTJ = Laptop Jockeys. JDJ= Jump drive jockey." I replied with "Keep DJ but change it to Drive Jockey?" Another friend said he's putting "music curated by..." on his flyers.

Some of us are bored at work, school, church, or family functions where it's not really viable to do any of those things.

Also, I like the "music curated by...." comment.

Theo Parish is kind of a dickwad about his opinions, but he uses the term "selector", and I like that as well.

But in the end, the name is marketing. And social conventions will dictate it to some degree.

Good point, well made.

This is legit. As I stated, I asked this question on my facebook profile and I am a DJ looking for an answer to this question. I don't put "DJ" in front of my name but when I tell people I am a DJ it got me wondering if an update of that title was needed.

Yeeaah.... No.

PC stands for personal computer, but thanks to the internet and social media, most PCs aren't personal at all. On a more serious note, they where called personal computer when they came out because the only computers you would have access to were at workplaces and such. Now, everyone and their dog has a PC, so there's no need to call them such anymore, because it's not that big a deal to have your own computer now, and hasn't been for over a decade.

So should we change the name?

Absolutely not.

Might I suggest Jisk Dockey as the new term of choice?

Iono man. I stopped putting the initals dj in front of my name once I got comfortable playing out my own productions and remixes. I believe the term has come to label a vast group of individuals. When people ask me what my role is, I usually answer with producer, but to each his own.
