What does Sync enable YOU to do?
Posted on: 22.04.2013 by Doreen Schurle
So here's a question which has been floating around my mind for a little while; for those of you who use Sync on a regular basis, what SPECIFICALLY does it let you do that you wouldn't/couldn't do when beatmatching manually?

In order to avoid this turning into one of "those" threads, here are some quick and simple tips with regards to contribution.

People who should contribute to this thread:

  • Those who use Sync
  • Can beatmatch by ear/visually
  • Choose not to
  • Have a specific reason for doing so

People who should NOT contribute to this thread:

  • People who don't use Sync
  • People who use Sync JUST to make things easier
  • Anyone believeing about posting a comment just saying "Sync is for pussies" or something along those lines

Anyway, with all that out of the way, I'll kick things off

Personally, the most significant thing I find using Sync enables me to do is drop a track with the channel fader UP, as I know that with properly prepared beatgrids, it won't sound "off". VERY useful for bringing in a drum beat into track B, right when the break in track A occurs.

Anyone else?

You welcome to check out my PSY mix I did about a month ago in the club, which I recorded.

I played 2 decks...normal tracks and then had deck C with a potent hat loop and Deck D with a couple samples.

I overdid it a tad...a bit messy...but you will get the point.
RAGED on the dancefloor.

i use the sync-function a lot since i love to do transitions with tracks that have totally different bpms. like from 130 up to 180 or from 180 up to 220 (110) and so on.

I only use Sync when layering techno with 4 decks+, i would would never use sync for A-B mixing. I have 2 cdj 2000 nexus and i have tried the sync to check if its as tight as traktor (which it isn't) and found it easier to use my ears. So imo using sync for 2 decks is just lazy there is enough time to choose, cue and beat match 1 track.

Let's be honest people use it because it's easy.
I know I do.

Anyone who says different either post an example of what you do with all your spare time or tell the truth.

I'm asking for examples of how people here make use of sync. How does that imply that I should be the one to provide such examples?

@makar1 It seemed to be exactly what you ordered. Is that mix not something that sync enables one to do?

Check out this video, about seven minutes in. It's a tutorial in harmonic mixing, but Endo uses sync, quantize, keylock, etc in it to great effect, and is pretty great just generally. It sounds good to my ears.

Yeah, right. I bet not. I'm glad you like it though!

Sweet! Which of your mixes are like this? I'd like to hear some.

It appears most of you are missing something it's not just sync it's quantize that helps you lots. Turn off quant and just use sync bet you miss your drops lots... Reason is quant along with sync allows you to drops right... I enjoy traktor for quant like really quant is what you really are taking advantage of. Sync is only partially useful:..

You can layer tracks and cue jump without sync as long as quants on. Turn off quant and try it then try sync without quant. Snaps a really useful tool if you have the patience a to manipulate it lots.

Instead of wasting time beat matching I can go ahead and transition a new track, use all 4 channels, make sudden drops a lot easier, allows me to take time to pick the perfect track to play since song selection is everything

I'd say the most useful reason to use sync is for looping and beat synced effects like delay. Maybe helping you drop a track at exactly the right time as well with quantized cues and loops.

1) And most important, gives me time to find the right tune. The tune that out of my whole library will fit most well into the mix and fit where I want the set to go.

2) Gives me more time to do the best mix I'm capable of. I was going to write, smooth, but that's not always true. Sometimes you want to bang it in, and you can do that because as someone else mentioned, you can drop on cue with the volume up. That's cool!

3) Do more creative stuff like mix in accapellas, samples etc. I never do any of this stuff because I am laaaazy and also because I'm focused on 1) and 2). I like having the option there though. And sometimes I do do it. That shit was impossible when I was doing normal beat matching on 1210s.
All of the above. And regarding point 3: Yes, exactly. As someone who learned on 1200s, when the only option was to learn to beatmatch and then babysit it for those long mixes.. The stuff we can do with sync now is just mind-boggling in comparison.

Normally that is the argument for sync --- I have a bunch of things layered. I've seen Hawtin and others live and understand the concept, but my real curiousity is those that are not at that level (as I am not, and figure most guys here are on par with the average club DJ) I'd like to hear how the average DJ uses it. Especially intrigued with using Machine, I've thougth about using The Bridge with SSL and have heard some really good demos from some very talented guys.

Perhaps point out what you are doing so we can learn something vs. just saying "I layer multiple decks"

For me using sync gives me more freedom to use effects, loops and samples without really stressing with time constraints and having beat matching issues with the main track/s. I guess for me it just free's up more creative time!

Honestly I believe it wasn't the best. I couldn't grid all my tracks perfectly in sync and needed to bend a little in a while to keep them in beat. Pro fixed it.

I'm guessing this means you beatmatched when it was 3 and started using sync when Pro came out......cause I was a lil confused. To anyone thats concerned, sync was alive and well in 3
