Switching to Serato?
Switching to Serato? Posted on: 21.05.2009 by Elenor Andreotta Hey peeps,So I'm getting deeper and deeper into the DJ rabbit hole and I am seriously reconsidering my options. I just got a residency at the hottest club on campus + about to drop a load of cash on speakers to DJ private events and I can't afford to have an unstable setup. My traktor pro has crashed up to 7 times in one gig (yes ive tweaked) and today was the first time I didnt have to restart my laptop during a gig (thank god) but sound did periodically cut out for half a second during some songs. No offense but I'm starting to feel like my setup is a collection of toys rather than a legit DJ setup. For example: In my setup I can't tell if I'm clipping. I have no meter except for the little indicator on the top of TP that flags red. Shouldn't I have more control over my music though? Back when I knew less I thought I would be okay with a VCI 100 and Audiofire 4 but now I'm realizing all the little things that make a DJ's job (making a smooth mix) possible that is causing me to reconsider my setup. So now that my rant is over can yall tell me why I shouldn't switch to: Serato Ecler Nuo 2 (2x) Pioneer CDJ 400 | |

Delmar Hungler 27.06.2012 | A lot of good producers probably started with dodgy software, would you rather them not exist now because they didnt start legit? |

Johnsie Kingrea 26.05.2009 | I was just on the Serato community s (I like to mix hip hop so there's more information there for it) and would never switch if I had to deal with some of those people on that community . This is a progressive and empowering community that is very welcoming to even the most newbie questions. A noob in the serato community s is like throwing a sheep to a wolf pack, wolves with serato. |
Karolis Petrauskas 25.05.2009 | This is also a good place for tweaks...make sure you do the first bunch as they will help a great deal. http://www.tarekith.com/assets/XPTweaks.htm |
Yuonne Cauthron 25.05.2009 | eeeh.... I'm not really ok with people making money on the back of pirated software, and perhaps even stolen music? Why is DJing the only profession that it's ok to start off a thief? I call bull on this. Go legit or don't do it at all. |
Roberto Viccione 22.05.2009 | I wouldn't get Windows 7 right away. I don't care how stable everyone says it is. When Vista came out it was a evening
mare. But now it's really stable. Same thing happened with XP. I'm pretty damned sure it's going to happen with Windows 7. But you can save a lot of money (especially being that seems like a concern) and get a damn stable machine. Good luck to you. Let us know what you decide to do. |
Elenor Andreotta 21.05.2009 | Soulja boy tellem!!!! Well Mint.com tells me my net worth is $2,000 so buying a mac would make my net worth negative so the reason I don't have a Macbook Pro is because I don't have money in the bank. Why don't I have all the hot gear and an BMW M3? No money son. Okay time to get more serious so this thread doesn't become a joke. ==== Thanks to everyone that contributed this has really helped me out. I will strive to make money and buy legit software & hardware. ps. Ean Golden is the man. |
Harold Jaras 21.05.2009 | *takes deep breath* *exhale* .. to each his own it really is a personal preference, go with what works for you. but at the same time, give everything a shot. i've worked on every popular OS (yes, including linux), and i went with OSX because i liked it's reliability. this is NOT to say the others aren't reliable as well, i just went with what i felt was best for ME. you do pay a lot for apple products, sometimes a ridiculous price that gets lowered 6 months later with additional features, but it's all business dude. that extra cost does include some bomb customer service if you have an apple store near you, those guys hooked me up pretty well every time i've been in. but back on topic, my philosophy with gear is to stay with what you're comfortable with, because it creates the best environment in which to work, which is what the ultimate goal is. |

Harold Jaras 21.05.2009 | removes activation for WINDOWS. not traktor. never heard of an OS that offers a tool that removes activation for every application ever.. but i agree that a simple statement like that isn't helpful or constructive at all. |
Yuonne Cauthron 21.05.2009 | he said it removes activation. = pirating tool. --- Not to mention "just buy a mac" is NOT a solid solution for most people. Nor is it constructive. Offering a $1,500 solution up when it COULD be a a simple configuration issue OR simply pirated software seems a bit overboard. That's like someone complaining about their fanbelt on a ford escort, and you telling them to just buy a BMW m3 because it's notoriously a better car.. |
Harold Jaras 21.05.2009 | i believe it's important to keep an open mind, even if it means switching your OS. if he's having problems with crashing, switching to a notoriously more stable OS is a valid option. but seriously, did i miss when he admitted to using a cracked version of traktor? it seems a lot of people are jumping to conclusions. because he uses an alternative XP package doesn't mean he's pirating everything..just something to keep in mind. this thread is intended to help diagnose HIS issues, not the issues you say he has. |
Yuonne Cauthron 21.05.2009 | Telling someone to "just buy a mac" isn't welcomed advice in this community
. we pride ourselves in doing our best to offering good solutions to problems. now lets not turn this into another OS war thread. case closed. |
Leota Saniuk 21.05.2009 | in OSX you can keep "shift" pressed when logging in, this will prevent OSX from starting your normal "login items". though you still have to make sure that stuff like mobileme snc are disabled if you have an active internet connection (which you should to be able to play those requests you cannot fulfill otherwise). |

Matt Lucker 21.05.2009 | In windows I usually keep an extra User account, I keep it free of internet, any kind of extra software; anything that has nothing to do with sound. cracked software will always have issues (so put that together with Traktor's regular issues), if you are making money out of it, you should buy it. And yeah, no matter what, Mac will always be a better choice for media apps. |
Rolande Posso 21.05.2009 | yep cracked XP and cracked Traktor WTF and your moaning it doesnt work right smoke the crack at home doing it in public makes you look bad |
Vincent Durrance 21.05.2009 | Yeah go ligit and youre problems will dissapear, the Ultimate Johnny version of XP is garbage. Get a ligit version and than hack away with it. I have Vista and Ive done every possible optimization tweak, crack, and hack, and the machine is a beast (by Vista Standards) I started with a cracked version of TPro, but once I couldnt get updates and I noticed some features were either missing or not functioning correctly, I saved up some cash and got the legit version and its smooth sailing. And yeah youre computer is ummm, a feather weight. You could increase your latency and see what happens, but I love 2ms latency too much, so Id buy a more powerful laptop. 3gigs of DDR Memory nice duel core processing power and a big fat HD! Dedicated graphics wouldnt hurt either. DJing is a job of sorts, bring the right tools. |
Fernande Jada 21.05.2009 | hhmmm..i maybe should have googled "ultimate johnny" before replying: http://www.google.com/search?q=xp+ul...t&start=0&sa=N to solve your problem: buy a legit version of xp pro and traktor ... or just download the traktor demo version |
Yuonne Cauthron 21.05.2009 | You're using a pirated version of Windows XP. I have a hard time accepting that you're using a legit version of Traktor Pro as well. Get legit, and you'll probably notice a lot of your problems disappear! |
Cristian Carmona 21.05.2009 | Herrrrrreeesss Johnnny! Man $130.00 for Win_XP here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116515 If I was a betting man, I would put my money that the watered down OS ur running is causing the crashes. |
Roberto Viccione 22.05.2009 | Um... the above comment is completely useless to the discussion. Please refrain from this in the future. |
Claud Balkum 22.05.2009 | This is clearly a computer problem... Don't waste your money, buy a mac. |

But i believe what everyone is saying is "Get That Johnny Shit Off There". For running DJ software you cant have all that crap running around like rabid cats in the background..! |
Jean Marc Lopez 21.05.2009 | Also man, and I don't want to start a huge argument here, if you're using a cracked version of Traktor, it might be that. Honestly, I started on Tpro using an early cracked version and I had crashes, glitches and bugs all over the shop. Since switching to a legit version everything has disappeared. I know their have been updates to the software itself since the original launch but I have played around with a crack of the latest version on my second lappy and had much the same problems. The specs of that lappy are about similar to yours. Just something to consider! Best of luck |
Roberto Viccione 21.05.2009 | Once I got my grounding and power issues sorted I haven't had a single problem with Traktor crashing. Every lock up and crash I have had has been completely my fault, and has usually been related to some way that Windows routes power which I can usually change. So yeah, I believe this will be fixed with serious optimization of a legit copy of Windows, maybe a newer laptop might be in order. Or get Serato, but I have a feeling similar problems might creep up. |
