any IDM djs?
Posted on: 14.05.2013 by Laurel Litchko
So lately i've been into IDM and other types of non-house electronic music. do people DJ this? i have yet to see a "local idm dj" though i've seen the big name performers pull off amazing sets. this is going to sound ignorant (sorry!), but do people DJ this stuff? how? is it mostly an Ableton Live set?

EDIT:
i am not dissing IDM! i totally dig it i even have a new name that i am trying to produce under for it

Tesseract are one of the few math bands that still retain some musicality in the vocals

And of course, one of the most glaring example of a band that uses math in their compositions: the legendary TOOL:

Both progrock and mathrock/metal are pretty well defined Genres with particular features and, most of all, bands representing the genre.

@Firebr4nd

Math-Metal, imo is shit. Prog-Rock is a legitimate sub-genre, but like I said in my post...it's not the music but the 'fans' of the music.

Have a listen to some Mixmaster Morris sets. Pretty much what you have here along with a healthy dose of ambient and more eclectic tunes.

There should be enough challenge to DJ this. Getting that even flow throughout your set is not easy.

That's maybe why it's performed as live sets more often.

If you don't mind things getting a bit psychedelic, I'd suggest listening to Carbon Based Lifeforms and Aes Dana. They are more ambient, but when the beat happens you know the last 10 minutes of ambient were just a prelude to these amazing flowing beats. I'm sometimes amazed by how they flow so seamlessly from a soundscape to a really understated yet pounding kick. I use the more dancable parts as breakdowns in sets.
