Older DJM any good?
Posted on: 16.06.2013 by Gaynell Rydberg
So I've been waiting for a deal to come around on a Denon X1600 or X1700 or an Ecler, but I've been a bit slow at purchasing and missing out on them

I'd like to keep myself entertained though for the time being. I know people ragged on the DJM600 quite a bit for really poor sound quality. How were the other DJMs? Considering picking up a DJM400 for 150-200, but since it's not a 4 channel mixer, it doesn't seem to have that many reviews. I'm the typical EDM house/trance (bash on me all you want) mixer with A->B mixing so I only need 2 channels in the mean time anyways until my mixing skills get better.

tl;dr: DJM400/older DJMs vs the newer DJMs. Worth the huge increase in price?

I'm still waiting for that Zomo video! I'm really sad I don't have a Contour interface. I want platters.

I believe that was the issue I was hearing about. I believe I will just get either a pair of Stanton CMP800s or a Zomo in the meantime. Tis the beauty of modular, you can upgrade one by one !

Oh well, purchase already made for the 400. I've just heard pretty awful things about the X1500 which I have been avoiding and the X1500S is usually 100-200 more dollars.

edit: Turns out they're the same except for steel vs aluminum faceplate... Other community s... so much misinformation. There was still a slew of horror stories though about the quality of the X1500 for some reason.

x1500 is a rock solid mixer... not sure what stories you've heard? maybe effects? i never used these..
sound quality,eq's, and connections are excellent for the money - also comes with a penny and giles cross fader

400 is a decent mixer - will hold its money if you want to upgrade later..

All the FX on the right hand section are Beat FX that oscillate depending on the beat length you choose.

Woo! Just got the DJM. I love it already. Nice little set of effects, and I don't believe I'll get overhwlemed like Traktor.

That said.. is it normal for my filter to sort of flange? It's not a constant filter? I'm guessing this is because it's a BPM driven effect? Just wanna make sure.

What are CDJ950s anyways.

I'm not extremely worried abou the lack of channel filters since I'll still be using Traktor for effects. I believe I will pick up a Zomo to pair with the mixer.

CDJ950s? What does Link have to do with the mixer?

Channel filters > 4 Master FX IMO.

Why not consider the DJM350? If you planning on buying some used CDJ950's you could get the 350 and link everything through HID. It also has some simple effects built in if you would like to use them.

DJM350 > DJM 250. IMO.

This. You're better off asking local DJ's if they have any for sale rather than looking online(If you have the time to wait of course). Maybe you can spark up a deal that way. Also, you'd be surprised how many clubs and bars have old gear that sits around because they upgrade.. You can always try that option as well.

Hell, I still have a DJM-500 and it's just fine. I'm trying to sell it locally because I have a DN-X1600 now, but only because I wanted a Scratch-certified mixer.

Honestly, I never had any complaints with sound quality. People complaining about sound quality when "pushing it into the red" are declaring their own problem.

If you can score one cheap, don't sweat it. They are tanks.

That means the previous owner most likely beat on it

I used a djm 600 for years. Built like tanks, knobs are a little small on the effects section. But it was THE mixer in its day. I had a 400 also its a good little mixer and does the job for sure. If you find a mint 600 I would get it over a 400, but it would have to be mint.

lol i agree with you on the xone and pioneer part, But comparing a Rolls Royce to a Toyota is a little different. First 2 cars i can believe of is the Supra and the Toyota Crown (not released in America). Both are hand assembled and over engineered. may not cost as much as a rolls royce but comparable in performance and luxury.

Wrong section of Rolls Royce (I'm guessing??). They build plane engines here.

Small world patch, my dad work's at Rolls Royce, and my company does a load of the energy management stuff in there!!!

MR2 always had a fantastic look to it. And.. YOU WORK AT ROLLS ROYCE???????? Where's da pictures of all the phantoms :|

I definitely want to get a Xone DB2/DB4 later down the road, but I'm just not good enough at mixing to make it worth it to save my money and get the mixer I really want. I don't wanna look like the fool with fancy gear and not know how to use it.

I learned on a DJM 600, it's legit if you find a nice used one that wasn't beat to shit by the previous owner.

I was looking into one when buying my first mixer, but I decided to go with the Xone 22 personally.

Both the 400 and 600 are excellent deals :| I'm kinda hoping someone just buys one to make the decision for me lol. I believe I am going to go with the 400 though. It doesn't have midi out, but money saved now means more money to put towards the next mixer Doesn't have to be my last mixer! I do like full kill though.

I actually like analog mixers a bit, but the one I used was an Xone 42 which sounded so wonderful. I shouldn't have gotten rid of it..
