Poolside.....djing. Read on Posted on: 09.06.2013 by Lannie Kutay Ok so I might have taken a job that I'm not fully ready for... that's where I need your help! In late July I've been contracted to dj a nebhiohood pool party. It's an upper class subdivision here in Atlanta, and they want me to play from 6 to 11 at evening
. I'm not worried about the gear
, I have that all under control...it's the music.... My idea of a pool party is playing a lot of chill deep house, maybe some nudisco. Stuff like Fred falke, flight facilities, and maybe just some slow Balearic beat stuff. Not looking to turn this into some rager. But then I'm believeing suburban Americans might want to hear stuff like maroon 5 and Bruno mars and stuff like that at the pool?? That kind of music stresses me the f$$$ out. Haha so let me know if I am on the right track, or should I just run a set with top 40 crap? On a side note I really only took this gig because the money was good lol. | |

Lannie Kutay 26.08.2013 | Oh snap, i forgot i posted here. The gig was awesome!!! Crowd was more family oriented. I was using 2 TT's and a DJM-T1 I figured out during the set that if a played like a 3 and 3 format everyone was really happy. So like 3 songs from now and then 3 songs from the 70's or 80's, and just keep mixing back and forth. I was just freemixing, and It was super fun to discover how I could creatively mix older music into newer music and go back and forth on the fly. I really was not playing top 40 from any decade, but alot of lesser known tracks by popular artists. A really great gig with absolutely ZERO pressure. Everyone was just chillin. |

Frederic Pankiewicz 11.06.2013 | mainstream EDM and top 40, i would probably venture into other genres just to test the waters did you have to give them a demo? what was on that? |
Lannie Kutay 10.06.2013 | haha yeah im sure i can figure out the vibe within like 5 songs |
Judi Sissel 10.06.2013 | dubstep? lol :dunno:. I am sure you'll do fine. 84,000 songs should go a long way. GL |

Not to stereotype... but is there a majority ethnicity that will be attending this party? Is this a private party? What race are the host? Think those questions might apply...? |
Lannie Kutay 10.06.2013 | Damm incredibly valid points everyone has given me!! thank you all so much, kinda brings me back to the good ol days of djranking s glad to know you guys are still out there!! |

Yajaira Harang 10.06.2013 | For me i guess the pool is a very different ambiance, but it's mostly the people that are going to the party that matters, you could have a house pool party, or even have a Hip Hop on, a top 40 one.. All that matters is the crowd.. I believe i'd investigate to find what type of crowd is it.. |
Darlene Strohbeck 10.06.2013 | I feel for the OP. When I decided to go from DJ'ing progressive house in the clubs, to mobile DJ'ing, I got yelled at a lot by event guests for years for not having what they wanted. |
Kevin Brandin 10.06.2013 | Paul Simon , van morrison |

Darlene Strohbeck 10.06.2013 | Worst thing to do is assume that people are going to like Deep House, balaeric etc no matter how great you (we) believeg it is. Popular music is called popular music for a reason, because you could consistently walk into a room of strangers, and popular music will consistently fare better than the former (Deep House, Balaeric, etc). Don't be unprepared. In my experience, top 40's/popular music fans can be the worst because they have the highest expectations (that every dj should ever song in the history of recorded music). |
Logan Hochendoner 10.06.2013 | I would play a variety of music and see what gels with the crowd. Make sure to mix plenty of top40 in there. It's top40 for a reason. |
Albertina Fay 10.06.2013 | I would def play start off by playing some Tech House. try to find some songs that have been mashed up with the Top 40 songs, but that keep the Tech House vibe. It keeps a great vibe and get's people moving. Later on in the evening while everyone has had several drinks and much looser, you can get a way with some Progressive and Electro tracks. you can try it, but it always depends on the people. read the crowd. I always start off and gauge with tech house. let's me know if they need a little more, or a little less energy. |

Wilson Durrum 10.06.2013 | If you do weddings you should be fine with this party. I would be ready with Top40 Pop, Dance, Hip Hop & R&B. Also throw in some classic rock and old school (80s & 90s) Hip Hop and R&B. People do want to hear the new songs but love it when you drop an old school classic that takes them back. The mainstream house music may work as well. I DJ regularly at a bowling alley and I never know what I will be playing from evening to evening so I play all of the above to see what everyone is dancing too. |
Janyce Henningson 10.06.2013 | Just ignore the 'Pool' part of the title - it's a party like any other so if you have your 84,000 songs I'm sure they'll like some of them |
