How Do I Be a Good Opening DJ?
Posted on: 24.08.2013 by Myrta Neweii
Hey everyone, so basically I have a decent shot at opening for a pretty huge DJ in my hometown and its an absolutely massive opportunity. (Most of you will recognize the name but I'll keep it quiet for now). I'll need some votes in a few days so I'll let you know when I do...

BUT ANYWAYS

What is good opening DJ etiquette/need to follow rules? I know stuff like don't play their tracks an whatnot but probably am oblivious to other practices.

Any help is appreciated.

This is also a recipe for disaster. Play what you play. Watch for the response you get. I'd stick to your electro house set, but don't play all of the bangers. Establish a groove and keep it going.

NO ONE wants to hears you blowing the lid off the place at 9pm...

Like I said - it's the early part of a multi-headliner evening .

So - which is it? It probably depends on how high an opinion you have of yourself...

Don't be offended by that last statement - it has always been a DJ's prerogative to believe he is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Even if he is on the 7pm 'til 9pm slot.

The Truth is - it is at least as hard to be great warm up DJ as it is to be a great main act.

I totally understand, but what you have to understand is that this crowd is a bunch of students during the back to school "frosh week" phase of the local university (of which I also attend). They're not dubstep connoisseurs, they're a bunch of kids testing the limits of mixing alcohol cocaine and extacy. If you could recommend some dubstep that is a little more light and better for an opening set that would be awesome (record labels). Dubstep is far from my usual.

Don't be better than the headliner, but if you are already, play crap and curse under your breath afterward.

People come out to this specific venue to have a good time and party. This is one of the only decent clubs in our smallish city (120000 ppl) and I've noticed that the club classics get better responses in my area then does a 125bpm warm up set. If I break out on stage doing that I'll get kicked out. Guaranteed. No one responds to that type if set here. I need to pump up the crowd because the next set us heavily trap and dubstep and that's what they're paying to see. I don't have to play their genre because electro house goes over really well in that venue.
