Denon DJ Competition (Vote for me, with a twist!)
Posted on: 23.08.2013 by Doreen Schurle
I hate these "vote for me" threads as much as anyone else does, BUT, unfortunately sometimes you have to play the game to move ahead. I've entered the Denon DJ competition for BPM Show this year; the 16 people with the most votes (ugh, I know) go through to live heats, semi finals, final, etc. At that point, it's down to judges but before that, we have to crowdsource for YOUR help

Still, I don't want to win this unfairly or immorally, so I need to ask you guys for a favour. I'd love to have your votes, BUT, I don't want you to just blindly vote without actually feeling I deserve it. Listen to this mix, and if it's worth a vote - technically, I understand prog house isn't to everyone's personal taste - then vote for me. Otherwise, feel free to give me constructive criticism or even just tell me I'm crap, after 15 years the constructive comments still help and the insults are just water off a duck's back

Anyway, here's the page: http://www.visitbpm.co.uk/comp.php?e...4#main_content

Cheers everyone

Also why was there no denon gear in a denon dj comp? that's kinda weird...
Oh the end of the set they came over to the stage and asked me to kill it, hence the faders down (reached my 5 minute limit) But yeah, it's REALLY painful having to stop a set on a sound/lighting system like that lmao. If they'd let me I would've kept on for the rest of the day :P

Denon were sponsoring it by providing the prizes etc; all the gear that was supplied was by BPM themselves and Chauvet, hence the 2000s/900 and the 1200s. I felt sorry for the sound guy when I asked him to pull all the Pio gear away so I could set up :P

Hey, it won me the first round so it clearly wasn't THAT far off base :P Plus most Saturdays I play Haddaway - What Is Love, which is usually my biggest track of the evening ... although that's old enough to be proper retro :P

Just watched the video of the winner. Seriously, I'm shocked at that winner like almost everyone else.

I believe it's around 4:15 that he transitions between songs and you can hear that he's not beatmatched. It's so off. He then just fades one track out and the other in. The effects are really heavy handed and standard (FLANGER! PHASER! GATER!), and I'm actually one of those people that doesn't mind DJ's throwing in a lot of effects if it sounds good.

OP, nice work.

Second guy had some technical skills, but just too much button hammering, and again un-musical mashing. I liked how he did the chicken dance by turning pots with both hands at the beginning tho.
I'm watching the second guy now, loves to backspin out into the next tune.

Yes ahahaa.

The first guy won it, the song choices won't be to everyone's taste but his set did sound great in person; plus he did it all on a DDJ-WeGo which is pretty damn impressive. The second guy came 2nd place, because they didn't believe he could maintain that level of intensity for 4 hours. The last guy to play was the only one to have his actual MIXING criticised, but - like me - he didn't have anything prepared for the final and just threw something together last minute, so its understandable.

They pulled me up on not really looking at the crowd and staying quite "isolated" on the stage, in my own little world kinda thing haha, which is a fair point and something I know I do anyway.

The guy filming it cut the judges comments out but the mrs recorded it too so I'll post that one up when I get back from BPM tomorrow! Thank you guys SO much for helping to give me this opportunity

1:05 Track A too quiet and thin
2:25-2:51 Track A too quiet, strange filtering going on, highs from A left too long
3:37 Vocal sample cut off, then played too quietly
4:43 Random drop in volume
8:40 More strange uneven filtering
9:14 High pass filter tail
11:35 Unnecessary high pass filter? Making Track A thin and quiet, tailing off and sitting in the background.
13:25 More high pass filtering? Uneven changes in volume? Sounding thin again.
19:22 Another high pass filter tail, where proper phrasing would have sounded much better.
21:28 Filter..
22:40 Track A sounding very thin (filtered again?) with overpowering bassline from next track
23:11 Random gap/poor overlap. Again, proper phrasing would have avoided this
24:35-25:20 Messy clash between both tracks. Track A sounding thin again throughout.
31:26 Part of the song? Cueing with fader up?
37:00-37:20 Some phrasing would have been nice
38:45 More overdone high pass filter
42:30 Sounding weak again with the filtered track
43:00 Cut off too soon. Echo freeze might have been good here.
45:55 Noisy clash
46:44 Abrupt end, phrasing needed
49:00 Another clash (keys?). Track B needs to be louder too, take out some bass from A
51:47 Another high pass filter tail. Track A should have disappeared by now.
53:03 Part of the track? Or another track sitting in the background?
54:10 Bassline is a little heavy, vocals a little quiet.
54:58 Very thin sounding lead synth + vocals.
56:44 Bad clash. Proper phrasing needed.
59:11 More pounding bassline with thin sounding melody in the background.
61:05 Echo would sound better on the end of the vocals.

As before, EQing and phrasing need work so you might want to avoid the filter+FX for a while until you get those sorted.
WTF!
