Midi controller for effects for use with Hercules Steel
Posted on: 02.11.2010 by Miyoko Pennison
Hey Guys, Im not quite sure if this is the right place, but it seems to fit in...

atm, I'm owning a Hercules DJ Control Steel. So far, its fine.
But in some way, its annoying that i have to double-assign the EQ section to Effects with a modifier in Traktor Pro.

And here comes the question: I was believeing about a Kontrol X1 mapped the following:

  • Effects 1/2/3 and D/W to the 8 potis on the top, each with effect on/off button
  • (chained mode)
  • Changing Effects with holding shift+ moving one of the effects button to change the effect for the slot the knob is assigned to
  • Assigning the two browse knobs to filters , while pressing them resets the filter to 0% and turns on (just to be sure)

1. Do you believe that would be nicely assigned and possible
2. what to do with the remaining bottom 16 buttons and 2 knobs? i believe either cue or loop should be "transfered" to it... (i dont like double-assignments)
3. I searched for several hours, but couldn't find any other controller thats not a toy or poorly built ( like the nano series ) or too expensive...
if you know any other midi controller that would fit my FX needs, please tell me so!

Thank you very much!

I have my X1 in a very similar setup to the standard one which is pretty much what you said, 3 FX params and a D/W on the top per side. I have mine assigned to 4 decks using the FX 1/2 buttons.
So, it is possible to change the X1 to do anything i want?
can I assign the "Shift" button to work as a Modifier so i can for ex. change Effect 1 on FX Unit 1 by holding "Shift" and then using the second knob on the left?

@fullenglishpint: youre using a vci-100 with kontrol X1, right? how did you set up the kontrol X1? especially the FX?

Yeah, thought about that one, too, but didnt come to a conclusion regarding how i would map it.
apart from DW and 1/2/3 per Deck i want to do the following on-the-fly:
-changing the effects for ex. with a shift button (on hold) can i do that with the master button?
and im not quite sure if touch works out great. Additionally, the buttons which would turn on/off the effects are totally seperate of the vertical sliders....

anny suggestion? already searched for midi specs of it, but i didnt find anything yet...

EDIT: I buyed the controller mentioned above, and hope the scs.3m will fit my needs...
Thanks to you all.

An SCS3m would be a nice alternative to the X1. Its very customizable, you can basically map it to do whatever you want. And theres a guy selling one in the community s for cheap I believe...

Basically, yes. Shift (which can be either a hold or a toggle) effectively changes the 'page', not acting quite as a modifier but rather a whole separate controller... The rest of the buttons (apart from HOTCUE) are totally mappable like any midi control, but in native mode. Then of course there's midi mode!

X1 would do the job for you brilliantly.

I believe the X1 would be great and you could also add pots and faders to a midi fighter.
