SCS.3D - DaScratch Preset
Posted on: 23.12.2010 by Tyisha Towle
Hello All,

I was about to start building a preset for my Stanton SCS.3D (and TP 1.2.7), but thought I'd ask here first in case one such preset already exists.

I was going to create a preset for a single SCS.3D and 2 deck control, with the following...

(one of the presets that comes with the new Da Router software is about 99% there...just needing a couple of things.)

1. The bundled preset allows control over the Gains on each deck, I was hoping to have it control the volume faders instead. (So I wouldn't need a mixer)

2. Browsing and loading (if possible)

The rest of the standard preset (FX, Looping, etc... is fine)

Like I said, I don't have an issue having a go at it myself, but if someone has already done it, I would appreciate the share. I'm looking to build an ultra compact rig (I'm using an HP TC1100 Tablet) for small parties and also for chilling out on the couch

Thanks DJTT community!!

I forgot to mention that I believe this venture relies heavily on Bomes (I believe)... needless to say, I'm COMPLETELY in the dark about this... and immersing myself in this over the holidays may render me absent from family festivities..hence my inquiry here.

thx again!

Correct.

The preset is written in Bome's for DaRouter and is telling the buttons or surfaces what midi message(s) to send.

The .tsi is what Traktor uses to to assign that message to a function within Traktor.

I'll walk you through changing the existing Gain to a Volume Fader.

Start by running the TDS Single SCS3.D v 2.0 preset in DaRouter

Start Traktor then open the Controller Manager section under the File tab (can also be found in the preferences)

Delete any existing .tsi you have loaded (generic midi) and reload the SCS3 System Traktor Pro v 1.0 .tsi

MAKE SURE you set the In-Port/Out-port to DaRouter. It's right there in the controller manager tab in the upper right hand corner.

Now you will be ready to map a button to a function. Here we go

Select Add-In>Mixer>Volume Fader

Then with your mouse highlight the "Learn" button. Next touch the area/button you want to control that function. In our case the upper left slider of your SCS3.D, you will see Traktor decifer the message as CH08.CC.96

VERY IMPORTANT!!! De select the "Learn" function after you've selected the control you want.

Next will be the Mapping Details to put more detail on what you want this button to do.

Note you can test these commands with the Controller Manager screen still open. Go ahead and slide the Gain and you will see the Volume Fader and the Gain are both moving.

In this paticular circumstance the Volume Fader works well with the default settings Traktor has put in. One thing I would change in this section for this control is the Assignment to Deck A instead of Deck Focus.

We could change the Type of Controller or Interaction Mode, but we're not going to. This is something you should experiment with on your own as it allows direct or relative messages which allow for customization for the feel you personally are looking for.

Now we have to delete the Gain function. It's really easy. Sort the Maps by clicking the Mapped To tab. Now scroll until you see your highlighted function that will be next to dimmer highlighted function(s) that are on that same channel. You'll see there is a Gain In and a Gain Out also assigned to CH08.CC.96

Now may be a good time to start trying to comprehend the Midi Out messages that Traktor sends to DaRouter and back to the SCS3.D. This paticular one is rubbish as you can use nothing from it to make a Volume Fader out do anything constructive on you SCS3.D. So...

Delete both the Gain In and Gain Out.

Because it's Christmas here is the Volume Fader out settings that will work.

Add-Out>Mixer>Volume Fader

First you must manually enter the channel you want the message sent to, we know it from above as CH08.CC.96. Why Traktor doesn't let you learn Midi-Out functions is beyond me. So either take notes are which channels are which or do them immediately after assigning the in. It's a trial and error type of thing that also led me to investigate how this had been assigned in the default presets. It's not as easy as you'd like it to be.

Here are the settings that work for this function.

Assignment Deck A

Controller range 0.0 to 1.0
Midi Range 1 to 127
Blend checked

So that's it you've successfully mapped a slider to do what you wanted it to.

Now you should get what will need to be done to make the rest of this map fully functional as EQ or FX modes flat out do not work. Either take some time experimenting and modifying the default .TSI which I would recommend as you can compare your new maps to existing ones. But with this default .tsi there are an abundance of unused messages as this was designed for use with Two 3.d's and a 3'm. So I'd prolly dick around with this a bunch then start a blank fresh .tsi from scratch and know it like the back of my hand, referring back to what I had learned modifying the default one. SAVE YOUR PROGRESS by selecting Edit>Export.

You should be able to pick it up rather quickly. Bome's on the other hand is no simple task. Good Luck and Merry Christmas. haha

SUCCESS!!!

Thanks norequest!

Volume faders are go.

I can do without the trigger section, so I'll do away with that and replace it with some loading and browsing mappings. (assuming I can do that...hehehe)

I'm confused with the difference between "Preset" and ".tsi"

Like hippie mentioned, the mapping is really close, and if I have to use a mouse to drag and drop songs into the decks, then so be it... but having the sliders mapped to the volume faders instead of the gains is crucial.

Am I supposed to modify the mapping for Generic MIDI? the preset is selected from within DaRouter.... I'm confused.

If the mapping and preset is so close to your ideal setup already I don't believe there's any need to buy and learn how to program Bomes.
Why not just reassign the gains to volumes in traktor and add a modifier somewhere to switch it back to a gain control (if you need it) and while the modifier is active map the vinyl modes for loading/browsing.
I've modded the 2 deck mapping, using the tap button for the modifier, adding loading/browsing when the modifier is active. And for switching between chained and advanced effects (and added the advanced FX) in the FX modes. And a few other tweaks in the traktor mapping without the need to buy and learn how to use Bomes.

Yeah as mentioned above what you could do is run the TDS Single v. 2.0 in DaRouter. Then in Traktor add/import the full SCS3 system preset. This is going to give you functioning controls in Vinyl 1/2, Loop, and Trigger Modes. I turn Vinyl 2 into Browse/Load (note you will lose BeatJump value inc/dec). You will also need to reassign FX and EQ modes to be funtional as the tsi is looking for a different messege then DaRouter is sending from the TDS Single preset.

This will save you eons of time trying to learn Bome's.

What DaRouter preset are you using? I peeped them and looks like the "TDS Single V 2.0 is going to give you the most midi commands that you could assign to whatever you'd like in Traktor. You could easily get what you've asked for w/o touching Bome's.

Yeah man Mixxx has browsing/loading, volume faders, gain control, maddd cue points (32 I believe).

For what your doing it sounds like it should work fine with no tweaking. As for tweaking the singe 3d darouter, you may be able to achieve w/o bomes.

Good luck! Bomes is rocket science. I've put browsing loading on vinyl 2 on deck 2 on a scs3s tpro preset. Haven't even tried a single 3d to let you know what's there to mess with. Sounds like you may want to check out Mixxx. No Bomes or darouter necessary, and default may include what you're looking for. I'll check for ya actually. Mixxx is missing a lot of features compared to Traktor, but gives you the essentials to mix. Should run a lot smoother too, not sure how powerful your net book is.
