My favorite Beatslicer settings
My favorite Beatslicer settings Posted on: 17.01.2011 by Charline Dye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMI9J4Ujx3Q&feature=subNothing revolutionary, just beatslicer settings I have premapped to adjacent keys on my Oxygen 49. I've seen a few posts where folks say they don't know what to do with the beatslicer, or it never sounds good. So I knocked out a video today. Hope you like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsfe9uY2ZWU Was able to knock out another quick video. Builds on Ean's freeze videos by premapping settings to different values as in the beatslicer video above. | |

I truely believe how your controller/controls are set up affects your sound and how you play/affect the music. It is also interesting to see how people use the same exact same settings (as in a pre-mapped controller like the S4) in different ways. Everyone believes differently and developes their own flow and methods. |
Corey Tronchin 24.01.2011 | Inspired by this post I've started mapping the spare buttons on my second X1, which essentially I'm using as a mixer. I've got effect units 1 and 2 as chained effects on my 1st X1, and decided (after finding out the 'steps' you have to take when you also have to map a switch to advanced) to leave them as they are. Bare in mind i've got a 2 deck setup. Instead, I'm using effect units 3 and 4 for the button mapping. So, i've got it set up a bit like this: on the left i've got 6 buttons, on the right i've got six buttons. On top of that i've got an independent 'fx on' button for deck A and deck B. With the left rows of buttons I can select one of the 6 effects that i find to come in handy for this system. I've managed to decide 4 already, being Delay, Slicer, Beatmash and Turntable fx. The other 2 will come one day. On the right side I can create 5 presets for each of these effects, giving me quite a lot of quick options (6x5=30 presets) the 6th button on the right is the sampler. I've mapped effect unit 4 to that one, with slicer and a 2 bar setting. This way I have a 2 bar sampler for whatever I cook up with the button effects. This actually is a lot of fun to play with, as the buttons effects give a lot of juggle-like effects, so you can create a very funky 2 bar beat on the fly. I hope this makes sense. |
Charline Dye 24.01.2011 | Thanks for the info! The setting a loop thing is a good idea. I might try that instead of my current method. I have it set up for my beatmasher, but instead of a loop, after 4 beats I turn off play while the beatmasher plays. When I am ready to continue the song, I have a button that turns off the masher and turns on play so the song begins where I left off. It works, but if you miss a beat when turning off play, you can tell when you restart. Even though I have practiced it enough to have it down, the loop may make this fool(me) proof. +1 on the poor mapping editor. |
Danae Dumler 24.01.2011 | yeah, it's mapped with a "record" button that captures the slice and then eight buttons to play with different preset slicer settings while the sample stays on. It also triggers a loop so that when you're done messing around you go back into the song where you left off. Pretty smooth. I wish there was an easier way to do midi-mapping. If the settings could be export-imported from text files that you could edit in other programs, it would be a lot easier to do these things. You kind of have to reinvent the wheel with every midi map. |
Charline Dye 23.01.2011 | Thanks Drew! Just realized Ean's midi fighter mix uses premapped slicers, or looks like it to me anyway. 2 with a ton of buzz. I had watched it when it was first posted, really didn't pay close attention to how his Fx worked. Watched again toevening and payed attention lol. Not sure if they are all premapped. Anyway, times in video where he uses slicer are 1:30, 3:08,& 5:24http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8eB83axVvw |
Graham Frazier 22.01.2011 | Very nice. Thanks for sharing. |
Charline Dye 22.01.2011 | If you map to a fader (set as a button) it will do it all in one movement of the fader. Which is how I have the delays mapped. |

Leeanna Ayla 21.01.2011 | Double check that the button modes are set to direct where applicable and if you've got any modifiers those are correct. |
Corey Tronchin 21.01.2011 | hmmm, been playing around with presets this way and for some reason, when I map all the parameters including the effects select to 1 button something doesn't work. It only selects the effect and not the parameters. only when i have already selected the effect manually it selects the parameters when pressing the button. almost like it sees it as 2 steps which it can't take at the same time. Also, i wanted to give me more possibilities by using a switch to advanced by pressing the same button, since i normally have my effectunits set to chained mode. That makes it three steps to take in one go. Is this something you bumped into too Vangogo? If so, any ideas how to work around this? |

Christel Croak 21.01.2011 | Thanks so much, I used to beat slicer before to sample, but i never used it to add such amazing glitch sounds! Another preset I really enjoy using is having: Effect Button 1: 1 Effect Button 2: 1 Effect Par 1: 0 Effecct Par 2: .700 Effect Par 3: .600 This adds more of a syncopated feel, and when you pair it with a second key having Parameters 2 & 3 at 1.000 it has a nice feel to it. |
Corey Tronchin 21.01.2011 | Hi, Even though I'm probably gonna design it in another way as you describe I do want to thank you for taking the time and energy to make this post. It's these kind of posts that make this community a very practical and inspirational community that does bring someone forward in their skills! |

Good combinations in order of pressing the keys (while still holding down each key) are F, G, A can add A# to finish B, C, A# F, F#, D# can add C# to finish F#, D#, C# If you have any questions just ask. |
Charline Dye 19.01.2011 | In this mix the first song is mashed with Pony and I use the first premapped beatslicer values I covered to vary up the bass line from pony. I also keep the bass line going for the next song and again slice it up. http://soundcloud.com/vangogo/kitchen-sink-mix-short |
Arturo Banerjee 19.01.2011 | thanks man, these are awesome! |
Irwin Ney 19.01.2011 | I will def check those videos when I get home. |
Charline Dye 19.01.2011 | Ok shmobletons, you stirred me up to play with the buzz knob. I have come up with some fun stuff I'll make a video of in a day or so. For now though my favorite using the buzz knob is.... parameter 1 (Buzz) knob value=21.84, mapping value=direct and .729 Parameter 2 knob value=S4, mapping value=direct and .750 Parameter 3 knob value=P4, mapping value=direct and .750 Both buttons are off Works very good for 4 beats, 2 beats, and 1 beat. Sometimes longer, but rarely, depending on what is sampled. Once again, try it on the upbeat, and the down beat. Nice and glitchy! |
Ignacio Hoal 18.01.2011 | That's great, thanks man. Now I know what to do with few of my free button on controller |
Charline Dye 18.01.2011 | I haven't used the buzz knob premapped as yet, but have used it while using my slicer "sample" button that I mention in the video, and Ean shows in one of his videos. But I do not leave it on for very long. I am going to premap some more slicer values with some using buzz. I'll see about another video when I do. I still have 6 buttons in my slicer area to use, and don't know if I can come up with that many, lol. Thanks again for the attaboyz everyone! |
Treasa Maffucci 18.01.2011 | thanks for the share, good work. just wondering, do you ever use the "buzz" knob, the first knob of the beatslicer in advanced mode? i found this is the hardest knob to use and make sound nice at the same time. |
Lewis Stumpf 18.01.2011 | Nice, thanks |
Melinda Shick 18.01.2011 | Thanks man will definitely use these, being putting together a mix tape with a lot of breaks. |

Leeanna Ayla 18.01.2011 | Nice work as always. |
Charline Dye 18.01.2011 | Happy to share, and glad you like it! Break Beat is my prefered genre (always gets me moving), and they do work well with it. Try using these on the upbeat and the down beat for different sounds. In the video I did mention it briefly, but just to be clear,I am holding down the first button, then with out letting go of it I am holding down button 2, then adding button 3. |
Antonetta Wikel 17.01.2011 | Nice one man. Definitely seems those presets are great for a breaks set. Thanks for sharing. |
