Question about midi, global channels and and midi controls
Posted on: 16.02.2011 by Breana Singerman
How many unique midi controls can you have on one global channel at a time?

Example being, you have one midi controller with 20 various buttons and knobs, cc1-20, on global channel 1, and you have the exact same controller and leave it on global channel 1 but make those 20 various buttons and knobs cc21-40 so they won't interfere with each other now.

Is there a finite number of controls one can have on global channel 1 before they move onto global channel 2?

There's a finite number, but what it is exactly I don't know. There are Control Change messages that are available that don't even have a number, but are known by name, like Aftertouch, ModWheel, etc. I'd guess that there are 128 regular numbered cc messages available per channel, and as many buttons (note on/off) as there are within C0 to C8 or however many octaves the midi standard uses.
