Cool beatmashing with S4 jog wheels - Ean's S2 jog wheel effects reloaded Posted on: 23.10.2011 by Rey Holubar Hey everyone,Ean's S2 video got my imagination going and I actually created a mapping for the S4 that pretty much emulates the settings he has in that video. However, Ean's mapping was made especially for that cool Depeche Mode mash-up he created. It doesn't really work for general mixing. So I decided to work out the best part of that mapping for both Decks A and B and I'd like to present it here to you now. The jogs both control a beatmasher and peak filter in group mode in the first effect bank and turns on the T3 Delay in the second effect banks. There are some cool things you can do with the jog wheels with these effects. 1. Catch and beatmash the track, changing the rhythm on the fly with the jog wheel. 2. While beat mashing, you can use your other hand to jump to another cue point or use the scroll knob to bump the song forward, then find a break or 1 beat and let go of the jog. The transition is pretty smooth. 3. You can catch some vocals in one deck and beatmash it, while a rhythmic part is playing in the other deck making a great mash-up. 4. You can catch a beat on the running deck and play with the rhythm while blending in the other deck, then towards a break, you can turn the jog counterclockwise causing the peak filter to add a sweep effect. This adds to the energy of the break. 5. You can do the same thing in the current playing track and create a different sort of sweep into a break. You just have to turn the jog wheel fairly quickly. This TSI requires 4 effect banks and also the Load button selected to turn jog wheel effects on. I also fixed the problem I had with the browse mode and the load buttons. My next step is to be able to use the load button with shift button, to load different effect groupings. My first will be to make armyofme's sweep. Any other ideas for effect groups or other cool stuff that could effectively use the jogs would be appreciated. Have fun! scamo Updates: Version 3. Looking into a camera and also a good video editing software. But that means some pretty hefty investments, which aren't possible at the moment, so I am stuck for the moment to just screen capturing. | Rey Holubar 01.11.2011 | Small update. Yup, another mistake. The effects bank 4 doesn't get turned on. I have no idea how that could happen, as it was working the whole time on my setup prior to testing the import. Oh well.... At any rate, I've fixed that small problem and also have worked out a method to change the effects groupings. I couldn't use the load button as I had hoped, as shift+load loads a track, which isn't a good idea to have happen, if a track in running in that deck. So I am using the effects mode button, which doesn't have any function with the shift button pressed. I've gotten Deck A working already and can switch between Ean's beatmasher jog and Priscilla's (armyofme) sweep drama effect. Works great! Now I just need to map Deck B for the same grouping. Too tired to finish right now. After working with the controller manager for a good while, I start to go a bit bonkers and loose concentration. Plus I start to play too much with the new controls while mixing songs and completely loose track of where I was. I hope to finish Version 4 tomorrow. scamo |

I'll take a look later (my S4 is in another room) and make sure I don't have another stupid mistake in the mapping. This mapping stuff is practically like computer programming and I am not doing enough testing of my own work. I'll improve that in the future. scamo |

| Rey Holubar 30.10.2011 | I now know I need to delete the mappings and then re-import it as part of testing. (Just to make sure it works on a "naked" system). The TSI (Versions 1 and 2) was made to import through the controller manager with the default S4 mapping already installed. I also found out, when you import it this way, the modifiers could get screwed up, if you try to press the load button before setting the load button to "Jog Wheel FX". Then it gets all screwy. So I've exported over the global export and hope this will work for you all too. I did in my tests. I also found an error in the mapping too. So version 2 should be deleted. And thus, I've added Version 3 to the first post in the thread. This one should work with the big import button. Thanks guys for your help and feedback. scamo |
| Rey Holubar 30.10.2011 | I'm going to test this and see what happens (I am learning too.). It could be over the big import button, you are saying to Traktor "this takes over everything in Traktor", which is not what the TSI was made to do. It should be added to the default (and hard to change) S4 controller mapping. Like I said, I'll test it out and if I can come up with a procedure to properly import the TSI, I'll let you all know. scamo |

| Phylis Lebby 29.10.2011 | R1ch, I can confirm. When imported, it replaces the original mapping that normally controls the S4, so all the normal default controls are missing. I'm not quite sure how to have the 2 mappings working side-by-side. |

I am still a bit void on what kind of other effect combos I could add (and I hope I can also get the shift+load to do what I want). Since I am a beginner, effects are all new to me and I sort of have to cheat and copy great folks like Ean and Priscilla to get ideas for effect groupings. And BTW, I thank them both for their great contributions too. So, if anyone has an idea for effect groups where the jog control could be interesting, please let me know. scamo |

You can at least get an idea what the beatmasher on the jog wheels can do. It is in about the last 2 minutes. I find with this setup, the jog wheels finally have a cool use.
