Sending different MIDI channels with a controller. Hey guys, I've been wanting to add an element of live playing into my sets. My idea was to have a bunch of different synths running in Reason (I produce in Reason, so that's the natural choice since I've saved combinators in there) and set up my rack so that each synth can only receive MIDI from a certain channel. I can control Reason with my Korg PadKONTROL by saving different scenes in its editor librarian and having each scene send MIDI notes on a different channel. I can also do this using an iPad running Beatsurfing, as you can assign a MIDI channel to each button you create in Beatsurfing. But I would much prefer to use a keyboard, like the Axiom 25, MPK25, or even the Korg NanoKONTROL series to save space (probably the best option). I'm sure if I was really dedicated, I could even design a Max patch to route MIDI to different channels, selecting different channels with a different MIDI controller like the PadKONTROL or something. Reasons I don't want to do any of those things: 1) I already use the PadKONTROL in Traktor for effects; playing a synth with a pad grid isn't very intuitive; and there are very few knobs/faders with which to tweak synth parameters. 2) an iPad is expensive as balls, and playing on Beatsurfing is also not as intuitive as just playing on a keyboard. Plus no velocity sensitivity or weighted keys. To be clear, I'd actually be playing melodies, not triggering loops or anything. 3) If I was using Max, that'd mean my computer would be running Traktor, Reason, and Max at the same time. Crash city b*tch, crash crash city b*tch. Plus I'm not that good at Max so that might be a frustrating endeavor. So my question: does anyone know of a MIDI keyboard that allows you to save and load scenes like with the PadKONTROL, and edit scenes via an editor? Or even just one that allows you to select different channels? That would make my life much easier; switch scenes to switch MIDI channels, thereby controlling different synths. Thanks y'all! | |
