One shots and Loop Recorder=Drum Loops for days Posted on: 31.12.2010 by Charline Dye Obvious I know, but I've spent 1/2 a day playing with one shots making my own drum loops. A couple of tips for those who haven't done this.1. use a drum loop or Tick to get your timing right. S4 doesn't quantize like a DAW so you gotta be on beat! Do not use CUE as your source if you are using Tick, use Main or it will record the Tick. 2. Put the deck's focus on the S4 hardware in C and D so you can play the one shots different ways. Hit sample play buttons for the full sample or the cue button below the sample for quick hits. 3 Record one thing at a time, like bass drum first. Then turn off record and listen to it. Is it in time with the Tick/loop? if not redo till perfect. Then do the same for the next thing like snare. etc. 4 Use different fx, filter, eq, on the individual instruments. It gives them their own space in the loop, and for cool effects. Also "play" the filters and Fx while recording. 5 Want perfect 16th note high hats? Change the one shot to looped, and use the "in" loop button (while the deck is focused to the sample deck) to shorten it to a 1/16 loop. Viola You can use the sample play button to mute and unmute it to cut it in and out, or if you are using Main as you recording source the channel fader or cross fader can do it also. This is also a good spot to play with the filter or FX too. 5. Once you are happy with the loop, copy it to a sample slot, play it 3 times so Traktor saves it. Then locate the loop, rename, edit tag, and file. 3 quick loops to show some FX and filter fun. http://soundcloud.com/vangogo/sets/s4-drum-loops It would be nice to have MPC pads or a midi fighter for this, but I believe it's so cool to be able to do this in Traktor on the S4 !! (even if the buttons are small) | |

Charline Dye 04.01.2011 | Hey, thanks. I should have done 4 bars instead of 16 for a tighter beat, but was just showing some examples. I don't watch the play state, but I know what you mean about the way the samples play. As long as the hit comes before the sample ends it sounds good, but sometimes that isn't the case. To get the full ring of a sample that is too short to play quickly, I will just layer the recording. It's the size of the buttons that make it the most difficult for me. But the S4 isn't really made for this type of thing. It does make me want to get a midi fighter even more than I already did so I can drum the crap out of a sample, lol. |
Caryn Liberato 04.01.2011 | Massive respect to ya VanGogo, those are nice clean tight and interesting beats. Plus I love the mute idea for high hats. I agree it's dam good that this can be done on the S4, but I'm still a bit gutted the sample decks can't really be played like an MPC, hopefully there will eventually be some sort of play hold/work around out soon as I really want to be able to drum those little pads without having to keep an eye on the the play state. |
