What was your set-up before the S4? Why did you swith? Posted on: 09.05.2011 by Thelma Magdanz Was wondering what your set-up was before the S4? Why did you switch to the S4? How is it working for you now? Lastly, would you mind posting your laptop specs for using with the S4? Thanks in advance... | |

Len Lukawski 13.05.2011 | I also had this: |
Mac Fly 13.05.2011 | -Started with a shitty BCD 3000. I was young and thats all I could really afford at the time. Never did use it in a club. With a Hp Pavillon laptop. - Bought a VCI 100 and upgraded it to VCI 100 SE. With a Numark DJ I/O. Wasn't feeling the sound quality so got a Echo AudioFire 2. - The VCI/Echo/Hp combination was glitchy to say the least, I often had drop outs in the clubs when I was just getting into the scene and felt I needed something more professional to gain respect from all the pioneer fanboys. - I then sold my Audiofire 2 and bought a Presonus Firebox, also bought a Audio 2 DJ. Sold the Presonus Firebox and got an Allen and Heath Xone 32. - Then the S4 came out and it was everything I was looking for. I bought a 13'' Macbook and S4 with road case. Out of all that old gear I still have my Xone 32 and Audio 2 DJ for backup soundcard. - Lots of small midi gear on the side like a midifighter and akai lpd8. Don't use the midifighter much tho. - Looking into getting a technics turntable in the future just to explore scratching and be more versatile. |
Kena Herko 13.05.2011 | started with a crappy Kam mixer n decks, moved onto my technics 1200's and DJM 600. I wanted to expand so invested in 2 CDJ1000 mk2's. I loved my cdj's but the looping wasn't accurate enough for me so moved onto ableton with a uc33e and a trigger finger. Didn't like the ball ache of ableton (too much time setting up rather than playing) so invested in traktor scratch pro loved it, used a maschine to control it first then invested in 2 kontrol x1's but i wanted more tactile feedback so got a vci 100 arcade which was great, but as soon as i got hold of my s4 i knew i'd found what i had always been wanting lookin back on that i've spent a bloody fortune in the last 7 years |
Yon Gigler 11.05.2011 | Ok here is my list in order: 1200s & Gemini Mixer CDJ100s & DJM100 (thought cd was the way forward then - wrong) 1210s & DJM600 Denon DNS3500s & X1500 CDJ1000s & DJM800 Vestax TR1 Allen & Heath Xone DX Kontrol S4 I was running my digital on a Asus Laptop Dual Core, 3gb RAM and also my PC in the house. Now bought a Macbook 17" I also have various other controllers - see sig |
Matthew Yanagisawa 10.05.2011 | VCI-100 and MPD32 for better FX control and trigger cue points. Sold MPD32 and remained with just the VCI-100 to master the basics. Outgrew the device and with the sample deck feature incoming saw the S4 as a all in one solution for cue control, samples, and deck/mixer. IMHO The S4 it's put simply the best controller ever created. After dangling with the VCI-100 and the MPD32 and midi mapping and testing and changing stuff and layouts, nothing beats getting the box and be up and running in less than 30 minutes. I hope this becomes a standard in clubs since it's more cost effective than a regular pioneer setup and you could simply take your laptop and have everything there. My next buy will be an Ipad 2. to use as a dedicated sampling device and a controller for producing with Ableton. Problem is they have been out of stock since release!!!! |
Jarrod Hellems 10.05.2011 | I started with a Hercules MK4 and felt it wasn't what I wanted to learn on. So I got an S4 and currently learning on that. I have the latest generation MBP 13 inch. |
Miquel Catan 10.05.2011 | Went from 1200s in 2001. Then let them sit there in their cases for about 5 years. Sold them along with my DJM-3000 and Serato. Switched to a S4. Love it. Love the size and usage for my needs. |
Sherman Rauh 10.05.2011 | bcd3000, terrible piece of gear
, worked about half the time mixtrack, works well most of the time but is lacking any extra buttons Kontrol S4, bought it a couple weeks ago but is taking ages to arrive so I am not sure about it yet. Laptop is a dell inspiron with a 2Ghz Pentium Dual Core, 3GB RAM, HD4330 Video card and a 250GB HDD. It is more than enough power to run Traktor. |
Phylis Lebby 09.05.2011 | I was primarily using the laptop and a KP3, finally picked up a launchpad later on, and now I'm using all three with the wonderful S4. (Plus a roommate controlling lasers with an APC40!) |
Kecia Wnukowski 09.05.2011 | - pre historical stuff - 2xtechnics + gemini mixer then Behringer one - changed the mixer for a djm800 - added 1cdj800 & 1cdj1000 - added a xone 2d - added a xone 1d, sold the cdjs, gave one technics - got a xone:dx , sold the djm, sold the 1d & 2d - got a s4, should sell the DX - used and tried other mixers along the way - would like to try a Xone DB4 - very interested in a custom midi fighter - might get a 'simple' midifighter or an X1 (instead of the above) - being just broke all that within a range of around 14 years now. |

Michiko Schwin 09.05.2011 | I owned a laptop before.. Yeah, that's it, straight from nothing to the S4.. |
Lisa Lochotzki 09.05.2011 | I'm a gearslut, I don't have any specific kit, I choose the one I want. From SLs, CDJ, Mixtrack, X1, etc etc etc to S4, not to mention the mixed-up kit. Laptop? I only have ASUS: M51a and N61JV. |
Len Lukawski 09.05.2011 | 1995 - 2 x Soundlab DLP3 1996 - 2 x 1210s 2000 - Retired 2008 - Reluctantly sold 1210's after years of hanging on to them - arrgh! The Humanity! 2009 - Sony Acid for fun 2011 - Kontrol S4, 2 x Vestax PDX 2000 2012 - Ableton please |
Cristian Carmona 09.05.2011 | i went frm 1200's to vci-100 way back when, jumped on TSP w/CDJs, got the S4 and they went to Serato. I went to Serato, cuz it had everything I was looking for. The S4 is a beast of a machine, and I still use it at home. But for live gigs, SSL works for me. |
Dee Atondo 09.05.2011 | Two spoons and a gaping mouth |
Mandy Lupone 09.05.2011 | Startet as a bouncer at the local club, helped out some of the djs with their computers. Ended somehow up as a (wannabe? :P) dj myself. using the gear in clubs until one day at one club they changed everything to some old american audio crap. So i got myself the Hercules RMX and used it with Virtual DJ pro. I always felt that the VDJ was a bit amateur |
Nedra Fresneda 09.05.2011 | APC40 and Audio8. It was a great kit but I missed a more "traditional" setup at times. Added the X1 for extra flavour. |
Lucrecia Diloreto 09.05.2011 | Hmm... before the S4, i started off with the Numark Total Control, Dell Inspiron 1505, and my trusty Stanton DJ Pro3000 headphones.. I just used it to learn the ropes and to see if i would actually like this hobby, sure enough i enjoyed it and outgrew the controller and needed something much more advanced. I ended up getting a Dell XPS 16 laptop i7, 4GB memory, Kontrol S4, X1, HDJ1000 Headphones. gotta admit im a really happy man right now =) I am missing a few things still, i want to save up for Maschine! |
Leeanna Ayla 09.05.2011 | VCI100, order an S4 and X1 at the same time. |
Roy Houn 09.05.2011 | Started with cdj's and djm mixer. Bought traktor scratch pro, started off with a xone 1d, didnt like it, bought 2 X1's missed having jog wheels, so bought a vci-100se. Still wasnt happy so went for the S4, best thing i ever did Its everything i wanted in a controller it just took a while to get there haha.. believe my laptop spec is in my sig |
