Can anyone tell me more about the HaleMicro UMC32. This looks like a great device and I might use this for my first MIDI controller project but I am not used to those pins. Could someone show me an example of how a button or pot or fader would be placed on there.

You use a 2x5 pin IDC Header on a 10-wire ribbon cable to plug into the sockets, then you can either split the wires to reach the switches or make some homemade circuit boards for your switches (using protoboard or, my favorite, stripboard) and add a male header to the edge of that. Then you use a female-to-female ribbon cable like this one:

to join the boards together. Once you have the IDC sockets, headers and ribbon cable, the cables are easy to make yourself.
