Reply to Custom DIY midi controller based on the Behringer BCR2000

The midi controller I have in mind has over 40 potentiometers so the BCR2000 caught my eye as the 'brains' behind the whole thing. Anyone ever hacked one of these things apart? What about the LED lightrings? Are they controlled by the firmware or are they just midi-activated lights? I probably don't want to use them for most of the controls -only effects and controls which are shared between each deck.
