wireless USB port?
Posted on: 01.01.2011 by Danae Dumler
I'm looking around the web for some kind of USB port that connects wirelessly so that I can have a controller without a cable. I know there are such things but I'm at a loss for what to look for -- "usb wireless" searches all bring up network adapters. I'm just looking for the ability to plug in a dongle and have a battery powered unit to plug into. Any ideas?

Heh, yeah, it was a rhetorical question; I don't really imagine there's enough demand for this that anyone would sell them. But I am surprised there isn't a generic USB wireless interface available that could be adapted for the task, but it's pretty clear there's not, unless I add the battery pack...

For the lulz I'll post pics once I get things started ... I've decided I'm going to go ahead and make it wired for now and not get hung up on this detail just yet; I still have some tools and parts to gather.

Because I already have a midifighter and specific plans for it.... This would totally change my plans... I'm not sure I can get everything I want using a gamepad, though I should look into it. One thing I won't be able to get though is feedback, I believe (could you send MIDI out to a gamepad chip?); guess I have to figure out whether I could live without the feedback.

Seems like a lame thing to railroad my midifighter plans though; they already have wireless gamepad controllers, why not wireless midifighters? heh....

i like the parts where you could see her usb bracelet.

other than that: i dont like the nextbeat (even though J talked about it a lot) and that demo could have been much better.

I doubt it exists too. you need quite a bit of power to power a controller. And a few batteries wouldn't power for more the a couple of hours. Sooo, I doubt somebody would make that type of things

Also keep in mind that the unit has two jobs (requires more energy). It has to recieve a signal wirelessly and send it back out wirelessly which is too much for batteries.

The first game pad i hacked was a wireless one and It worked great. 4 faders and 12 buttons (not enough for a midi fighter style though)

If you only need buttons you could use a wireless keyboard as mentioned before.
This will give you around 70 plus independent buttons (before using shift ect)

As for led feedback.....It's not going to happen unless you go down the Arduino route or hack an old midi controller with midi feedback. You can get basic led feedback by wiring in some led's and resistors to a game pad which works good for toggle buttons but not so good for momentary.

HID to MIDI is a piece of cake though isnt it!?

Personally i would just do something like this...

Hmmm I found this: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MidAir.html

That would do the trick except I need to convert the midifighter information from USB to MIDI first? I guess I could get a USB to MIDI cable? Seems like an expensive and assbackwards solution; that midiair alone is $100. I'm going to have to give this some more thought....

That was my first thought,
The base could easily be modelled on a wireless keyboard/controller!

Actually I just watched the video and even the one I just linked has a 5V power adapter for AC.

Yeah it's for a custom build; I am believeing about just building a battery pack for the thing. I basically just want a wireless midifighter (though I'm planning to add a few other things to it); no reason this should require extensive battery power. I have a video game controller that runs off a battery and sends a signal to a USB dongle; why would a controller be so much different? I believe the problem is theres just not enough need for such a thing so nobody's bothered developing them. But before bluetooth there was an array of keyboards, mice, and pointers that communicated to the USB port in the same way, so there'd be no reason there couldn't be one with a port on the other end instead of a mouse or whatever.

I did manage to find this http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/revie...ver-with-base/ which basically is what I need but the price is way more than I want to spend on this, heh, so I might get a $30 wireless hub and jury rig a battery pack for it with some AA batteries.

Alright just a heads up: even though they are thought to be "high speed" you can never rely on them like you would with a normal usb cable. If I were you I would use the standard usb cable. :d

I believe if one exists it's in the future and will be after you build it.

No the power pack wouldn't work cos the dongle goes in the laptop, not the controller. You still need to wire the controller to the hub.

I don't believe there's such a thing mate.

Where would the controller get it's power from?

You could always use a a power pack or "charger" Hahahaha!

you can get one of those wireless chargers (like the one from energizer) and find a tip that fits

i dont know if this will work on any of the things because
a) i cant see if the power cord is detachable
B) what the part you plug the power into looks like
C) clicking on that google link simply takes me to google uk, so i dont even know what the usb thing like like
