Reply to SyncMaster (DIY Midi Controller)

Sorry if I'm re posting this. Its from 2008. But I can't find any information or side talk about this anywhere besides the source.

Hello everyone,
Browsing on the interwebz today I stumbled across a rather strange DIY midi controller built by a person named D.St-Amand. The post is on Hack a Day (which is a great site for a DIY'ers out there). Its called the SyncMaster.

Apparently its has the same functions as a normal midi. But the buttons and encoders are interchangeable. You can swap them any way you please! Probably some restriction for the encoders. But it really opens the doors on midi controller layouts. I'm really surprised this didn't catch on.

I Googled my face off! I didn't find a single word about this anywhere else besides of what Hack a Day (source) has posted. Does anyone have any information about it. What hardware is being used? Or even better how to make one!

Hack a Day:

[D.St-Amand] is designing the SyncMaster, a compact modular midi controller, from scratch. The design focuses on a modular build where you can swap out pieces like the one pictured above to achieve different layouts. Not only is it modular, but its very compact.
