Possible to RUn TWO s2's??? HELP
Posted on: 02.02.2012 by Kareen Kreft
So Me and my buddy are trying to start a side project together as a Duo. we both have s2's. I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible for us to run 2 laptops and 2 s2's ? he controls his and i control mine and mix together what we are each doing individually. My thought was two run each of our individual set ups through a two channel mixer using its crossfader to mix and switch between what he's playing and what I'm playing, like a rane 61 or 62 for example. Is this close to possible or am i dreaming?

If this is possible is there a better way of setting it up rather than using two s2's? any advantage to each using an s4 instead?

I have seen alot of people bash sync but never understood much why? I understand it wasnt around when old school dj's were coming up and alot of them hate on it now but i always thought of is as a new tool. Like if i worked construction, I wouldn't expect a guy using a hammer to get pissed at me for using a nail-gun, you know?

Point is, to be able to dj you have to know beatmatching or you can never switch to another group of songs with lower or higher bpm but once your in a section of your set which has say 5 house songs all around 128 bmp then whats the issue with throwing sync on until you need to bring in a 70 bpm dubstep beat for example'?
Let me put it like this.....

Jokes aside it IS VERY important to at least understand beat matching physics also to be able to understand how songs flow and match together, kinda like driving manual or auto.....same thing, you are bound to ba a better driver if you learn how to drive in manual.....thats just how it is....

Sometimes, I play with another DJ "battle style" she uses Serato and a pair of Pioneer CDJs, I use an S2 and Midi fighter Pro with Traktor Pro. We both have total control of our stuff and we both run on the same mixer. Just different channels nothing too complicated. The best part is beatmatching by ear and Playing on time.

Basically you'll be running the same concept. Let us know how it ends.

I wasnt sure if the setup would be attainable on just one laptop but im also not to great at mapping but can give it a shot both ways. As far as the beatmatching, yes we can but my partner has less experience and was hoping to show him the way faster if we were mixing together. I know sync is a touchy subject( personally i like to use it for certain mixes and feel it lets me focus more of effects, song selection etc but thats just me. ) It came to mind however, if running two s2's controlled by two dj's would cause difficulty beatmatching. Does any one have experience with this. Is it difficult to blend? And thoughts on using Sync?

BTW when i do use sync I use beat sync not tempo sync. not sure what the benefits of temp sync are but could never use it correctly even though its the default setting in traktor

Why wouldn't you want to run two S2 on one laptop. You could map FX1 and 2 for one S2 and FX3-4 for the other. Allso you could probably map the crossfader to fade between between channel 1-2 on one S2 and 3-4 on the second one not 1/2-3/4.
Adding a second screen would also be an option.
This way you could go really creative when you could handle the samples and mixing when your'e buddy could handle the effects.

why not? the only "problem" of 2 laptop's instead of one is that you can't sync them

This is actually a great idea for a duo, at this price you can buy 2 S2 and a small 2 chan mixer for the price of an s4, can you guys beatmatch? If you can then its no problem, just crossfade between each other, if not you will need to sync traktor via midi sync (cat 5 or wireless), wich isnt the most precise and not as flexible IMO....

Mapping the two is easy you can select global for a controller what it will control. But yes a mixer in between would work great just figured since said a duo would be less crowded....

Basically having two separate setups, with a mixer in-between, is what my buddy and I do.

I use turntables and Serato, and he uses Traktor and the SCS3 system. Hook it together with a mixer with an extra channel so he can plug in (you guys would need a separate one I believe) and then just beatmatch by ear to mix into each other.

Simplest way of doing it.

I know you CAN sync the two laptops, but it's really a pain in the ass.

My friend and I both have S4's and do gigs together. Both of us just plug directly into the speakers and we can mix that way. If you have an external mixer already then your solution works really well too.

I agree with the 2x4 setup which is what I was envisioning but is there anything special needed by the laptops to work together or is it easiest to just run each on separate channels and then bestiary when bringing our sets together

I'd go with a standard 2x4 style setup. Both of you using your own S2 and Laptop, with the output going to a central mixer, which goes out to the crowd. Both people playing on one S4 is too cramp... one laptop controlled by 2 S2's is possible, i guess, but enjoy mapping that mess (how could both controllers browse and select from the library at once?).

Great points and ideas, thanks everyone. Will list the final setup when we give it a go. Thanks again for the input!

Why not one laptop with one mapped to a and b and other to c and d or make it interesting and control a and c and b and d?

I do this... I actually use a little behringer mixer to combine the two s2's but have been believeing of using my DJM 707 since it sounds better than the behringer

actually that's quite a nice way to get 4 decks.. liking your believeing

prolly not cost much more than buying one S4 and a lot more flexible (especially if you're dj'ing with someone else at the same time)

So basically we'd have a mixer in the middle an s2 and laptop on one side and a loptop and s2 on the other with 4 jogwheels total
