Xone K2 as my only controller? Doable?
Xone K2 as my only controller? Doable? Posted on: 30.06.2012 by Heide Drudge So I've been using just a laptop for the last few months, and while it's not a bad way of mixing, I've got a little money saved and I really fancy a control surface to work with. I don't need or want jogs. Mixing purely with a laptop for the last while has taught me that for what I'm doing they're just not necessary. I also want something small that can be stored in a cupboard away from the kids. So I'm loving the size and flexibility that the K2 seems to offer, and I'm believeing that one of these could be exactly what I'm after in a controller. But I just want to get feedback and opinions from K2 owners and especially from anyone using just one K2, and nothing else to mix. Will it do all I need or am I missing anything obvious here? | |

Sadie Shewmaker 09.07.2012 | hi neuro, received my k2 last week. like you, i was looking for a setup with just a notebook and a k2. i am a beginner and i have to say that it is hard for me to find a mapping i am happy with. there are not so many mappings out there and the most of them are not for a standalone internal mixing, so it is on us to create some. i gave kalles mapping (www.djsetup.de) a try and so far this is the best 2 deck standalone mapping. the next days i will try to map one on my own. if anyone of you guys have a standalone mapping, 2 deck or 4 deck, then please post it. would be nice to see how other people decide to map the k2 and we could learn from each other. p.s. the latching layer mode seems to be a nice option but to be honest i would prefer a mapping without switching through all 3 layers all the time. |
Leeanna Ayla 01.07.2012 | You can map a button to move the cross fader for those times when you really need it |
Heide Drudge 01.07.2012 | Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like this is gonna be the way to go! With regard to the lack of crossfader, I get how fades/ transitions can just be done with the faders, but what about sharp cuts ( I don't do many, but do occasionally with dubstep) what's the best way to handle those with no fader? |
Ulysses Vittetoe 30.06.2012 | Easily doable. I love mine. You just have to take the time to make sure your mapping fits your workflow. Also, make sure all of your cue points are set to your liking, because those will be your main way of navigating around your tracks without having jogs. And, get used to mixing without a crossfader, but that's not tough and it sounds better in the end anyway. |
Linda Chavda 30.06.2012 | Yeah of course you could, Im looking into something like this myself (just an option.) You'll not have a crossfader but no biggy! and if you want to do some stuff that you cant work out how to do straight away youll more than likely come up with some intuitive mappings. Just remember, vinyl reigned for a long time with (usually) two players which only had play/pause buttons, a pitch slider, and super high res jogs, with a pretty basic mixer! |
