JBL PRX612M or QSC K12 Posted on: 18.08.2012 by Lindsy Toben Hello,Just an update on my choices so far: I went with the Denon MC 6000. Eventually, I was torn between the Native Instruments S4 and the Denon, but finally chose the Denon - the build quality, output options, software options swayed me over. Thanks for all your suggestions and advice. Now I need to decide on a speaker. My plans are to use this for indoor / outdoor events catering to about 100 people. I am believeing of either the JBL PRX612M or QSC K12. I currently do not have a subwoofer, but plan to get one very soon. Similarly, I am only buying one cab now - and will save up enough money to get a second speaker a bit later - probably by Xmas. I listened to both and it seems I like the bass response from the PRX a bit better. It seems it is also a bit heavier. However, I liked the fact that the QSC has a built-in fan, and also separate controls for high/mid/lows right at the back of the speaker. At the end of it, I was leaning towards the PRX612. So my questions are: 1. Are there reasons to go for the QSC as opposed to PRX? 2. If no, and the PRX is preferable, then should I go for the PRX615 or the 612? The price difference is about $100. I have read that there is very little sonic difference between the 15s and 12s, so it is better to get the 12s and add one or two subs depending on my needs. | Lindsy Toben 30.08.2012 | DJ Manson et al: I finally decided and went with the Yamaha DXR15. It arrived today - and I am happy with the way they sound even without the sub. Within the next couple of days, I will get a second one. Later, I will consider the Cerwin Verga subs (CVA-118) to complete the set. I am still weighing my choices - though I was leaning towards the PRX612Ms, I actually read abit about the Yamaha DXR15s and liked its power and versatility compared to the PRX12s. I went to the local GC and listened to each but noted little difference though it appears the DXRs had a bit more lower end. I really liked this + its versatility. What is your opinion about their reliability and versatility, in light of my needs? cheers, Oyiwaa |
| Cindy Askren 23.08.2012 | I personally prefer the sound of PRX612M, but I've heard that it has many overheating problems. If you are looking for a powered speaker that delivers high SPL and very good bass response, I would highly recommend Yamaha DXR15 or 12. They were developed in collaboration with the touring SR speaker company called NEXO. They are the best sounding powered speakers under $1000 range that I have ever heard! |
| Glayds Chritton 19.08.2012 | I definitely prefer the K12 -- it's a durable multi-function top that I use for virtually all my gigs. I have a QSC KW as well, but for most of my smaller mobile gigs, the k12's do just fine. |
| Marlen Deneweth 19.08.2012 | No problem. You can use any sub of your choice. I personally don't like the k sub but I've heard great things about the kw subs. EV, yorkville and rcf also make great powered subs. |
| Lindsy Toben 19.08.2012 | Thanks very much for all your input - they are very helpful. Indeed, it is tough choice since the QSC 12s costs just about $50 more than the JBL. The JBL has a crown amp - so they are great, but there is little about built-in protections for the amp as does the QSC (for example through the use of a fan). As a result, I am being swayed by the protection and connectivity options at the back of the QSCs. I do plan to get a subwoofer in the next couple of months, before I add a second pair of 12s. Do I have to necessarily go with a QSC subwoofer or can it be matted to a different sub ? If so, what would you recommend? Thanks - Oyiwaa |
| Marlen Deneweth 18.08.2012 | I would go with the K12 and add subs later. The Prx series has a tendency to clip and cut off after long hours of use. |
