Anyone in the navy?

Anyone in the navy?
Posted on: 25.05.2012 by Tonisha Rayman
I was curious as to how many people who DJ are in the navy. If anyone can tell me exactly what they do and how much time do they have to practice while enlisted. I'm pretty interested at joining seeing as I am going to be 21 next week and still don't know what i really wanna do. I'm also curious as to what they don't allow you to have in the navy such as piercings/tattoos.

Holycow! really? :P

But I've asked my friend who is in the navy she likes it and lives in cali would be pretty nice. I'll have to go speak to someone again about another branch but pretty sure i'll get the same answer seeing as I have 3 tattoos in the most visible places. (hand & neck)

This is definitely a question better directed toward the Navy.

As for your first question, demands on sailors' time are considerable. Do you really want to enlist, or are you perhaps interested training in something that could be used in both the service and as a civilian? By the latter, I mean anything from becoming a firefighter to training as an engineer or physicist.

I was in the Air Force for 6 Years and 8 months. I was lucky enough to stay at one base my whole enlistement. I had my Tables, Mixer, and speaker set up sent to me. LoL boy did my dorm mates either love me or hate me as I blasted my music on some JBL EON 15". Partied a lot. My schedule varied during my whole career. Either had a Mon-Fri shift or a Panama shift that is 3 on 2 off 2 on 3 off. So you basicly had every other weekened off. In the Air Force you have a more stable quality of life vs any other branch. If you join the navy expect to be on ship every other 6 months. Which you can not take your gear with you.

I would consider the Air Force if you want to still have some civilian style liberties.

They pay for schooling, pay for medical and dental and you get to live with them for free of charge.

My friends in the national guard, other branches call them weekend warriors. All they do is train on the weekends and still get paid good money, he has no bills and 90 grand saved up he's 22 years old and now in thailand training soldiers over there. So he gets to travel and pays nothing for what he's doing. I'm trying to get my math test finished up on my g.e.d then ill be aiming to join the national guard.

I know you're mainly looking at the Navy, but the Army is MUCH more lenient about tattoo's. Just wanted to put that out there.

I've /almost/ joined a couple of times, and I did 2.5 years in ROTC before having to drop out because I didn't score a scholarship and couldn't pay for it.

The Armed Forces are a good foundation to move on from. A lot of people find good spots to grow and really enjoy their careers in the forces, but it really depends on the person and what you're actually doing.

But I'd say give the other branches a look. I know the Army fairly recently changed their policy to allow more recruitment from people with tattoo's, as long as they aren't brutally offensive or gang related really.

Thanks everyone for the great information.

Sadly, I went and spoke with a recruiter which going in I figured I wouldn't be given a shot. I won't be able to join because I have tattoos in unwanted places. I'd go through the trouble to laser them off but I have given it a lot of believeing and I rather go another way and go back to school.

Im in the Air Force, however, my aunt and uncle are both officers in the navy. The branches are pretty much the same when it comes to the tattoo and piercing thing. Depending on if you have any now, they will usually be ok with it. The rule for getting them after you come in is pretty simple. They cant cover more than 1/4 of the appendage(arm, leg, whatever), must be covered while in uniform, can not be offensive in anyway and can not be on the right hand(no tattoo visible when you salute).

As for DJ'ing while on active duty, i found it a great stress reliever and great hobby. It all depends on managing your time properly between work and any other off duty school or training. I was in korea for a year and was able to get gigs at local clubs that paid pretty well, plus free food and booze. Now that i am in england and just had a kid, i still try to make as much time as possible to practice and goof around. You really need to promote yourself A LOT if you are going to DJ any military gigs, such as group or wing parties, plus it gets you in with the big mucky mucks.

The only downside is if you were to get a consistent gig with a club or company, you will need to get it approved by your leadership if it is going to be a legit paying job, only because you are under contract to work for the government strictly. Most of the time they usually dont have any problems as long as it doesnt interfere with your normal duties.

hope this helps. if you have any other questions, let me know!

Im sure they allow tattoos. unless its on your face or neck... arm tattoos are most likely acceptable, just google it.

I've done a bit of research mostly going to get one sided responses if i look through any navy sites seeing as they just want you to join. I would just believe it would give me some sense of direction and when i wanted to go back to school i would be paid for . I tried the whole computer science degree I understand most of it because soon realized I couldn't spend the rest of my life sitting programming at least 40 hours a week on a computer. Currently I'm just freelancing doing some company websites. I'll most likely go speak to a recruiter only for the tattoo restrictions since I can easily remove all my piercings but I do have half a sleeve and a few other tattoos else where that could cause issues.

I was in the mens dept of the Navy (nh, nm)...USMC. I loved it. I didnt get to dj as much, but heck I sure did travel. Did my time on a ship and we did have a couple of DJs that would play for events on the ship while at sea. On in days i believe its easier to dj in the service due to the compact size. I was still using Vinyl when I got in and jumped on to the digital side when I hit Japan in 2003-2005

At least he will have a job and a military background, free medical and dental.

I say join any branch while you can. Its a new and good experience, I'm signing up for a different branch.

Plus the recruiter will bullshit you, yes he will say... dj sure + u get to travel the world...havnt you seen the adds.... bullshit... you may get to see a few ports around the world, but dont forget that when you do get to these ports every once in a while your there with 500 other horny fucktards you work with.... sasuage fest wherever you are.... Ive seen it, I was in dubai alongside when the US ronald Reagean was alongside as well.... the evening before the new york hhotel had a wide selection of attractive working girls at a reasonabal price.... next evening there was none, well atleast none that hadnt been through a few sailors that evening , and hey, guess hwat the price doubled.... so yer, in your little navy jump suit, girls are more worn out and expensive.

Im in the mercant Navy, And I would never join the Navy....not these days anyway... Im an Ships Engineer and as a prt of my training we are taught everything that encompasses Engineering and more onboard... In the Nay they are only going to teach you one part of a very small job as this is effiecint for them.... heres an analogy.... picture your trained a s a dj, you learn everything from searching tracks, track quality... playing out, manging library, bal bla bla....everything.... if you were a navy deejay they might only teach you how and when to operate one fader because thats allthey need you too know. They have another man for everyother aspect....In the navy you will be living in close quaters with a lot of people on board which dosnt lend itself to finding adiquate time and space for deejaying....Im at work now, on a quiet day I can manage my whole 12 watch almost doing dj related things and I get payed for it. I can manage my time plus I almost have my whole watch to myself apart from my motoerman and the occasional visitor. My KRK VXT 4 are positioned by the computer and I pump it everyday... My honest opinion would be too look at the merchant navy, its a hard thing to get into, but more freedom, now war! better money, 4 times as much time off - payed time off. the navy is good if your a little lost, need a little disapline, whilst I mentioned I dont feel the training is as versitile as it once was, i would say that if you did a few years in the navy it would hold you in good stead for a job elswhere afterwards, regardless of wether all you learnt was how to say yes sir, master the art of close quater mastibation and how to engange that one channel fader.

I'm 34 years old, and NEVER considered joining any of the forces. I work in Defence, and I deal with a lot of people that have been in the Navy.

If I had my time over, I would give the Navy SERIOUS consideration as a career.

This is the wrong place for these questions. There are Navy internet community s, where you'll get the opinions of people currently serving - they may be a little biased, though...

I suppose what I'm saying is don't dismiss it too soon. Do some research and see what you decide.

I'm not really sure figured I would just enlist and go from there. It seems to be a better opinion at this point than just being completely confused in what I wanna do.
