Beginners Guide To Mastering DJ Mixes Posted on: 14.06.2011 by Latoria Kavulich Hey folks. I thought we should start a dedicated thread related to post recording techniques we can use to make our mixes sound awesome. Here's a great article i found covering the basics of mastering your mix: Finishing a DJ mix can be an exciting occasion. The satisfaction of knowing that you seamlessly blended and weaved an arsenal of your favorite jams is tough to beat, coupled with the excitement that comes from sharing it with your friends for the first time. However, before you race off to your Soundcloud and Facebook pages to post your new creation, there are a few steps you should take to give your compilation that extra level of polish. This tutorial is geared towards entry-level DJ | |

People actually expect the overall volume to increase during transitions and will accept even substantial (and especially gradual) increases without question provided that they aren't so drastic as to be jarring. On the other hand, they will not accept the volume decreasing during transitions. This sounds completely unnatural and is infinitely more jarring than any reasonable increase in volume. If you use a limiter or amplitude envelope to flatline the peaks of your mix, the transitions are obviously going to sound quieter because you've got two tracks playing at the same volume as one normally would be. At the very least, use your ears every step of the way instead of trying to graphically flatline your mix but, in my opinion, it's preferable to manage only the dynamics between different tracks and leave the transitions as untouched as possible. |

Isa Erik 26.02.2013 | Audacity tutorial is awesome! My mix sounds so much better But, let me ask you one thing: isn't mastering DJ mixes for promotion sort of like..."cheating"? I mean, promo mixes should be a sample of a DJ live gig, if I can't manage my levels in a gig and use DAW to polish it then I can also make my mix in Ableton/FL/etc. |
Mi Gabele 26.02.2013 | this made me laugh so simple, thanks. |

Latoria Kavulich 16.02.2013 | Its called something different in audacity i believe. |
Jolynn Schroyer 12.12.2012 | Downloaded the program put my mix into the software and adjusted the highs and lows sounds way better. edit: now i'm trying to do edit my db on a new mix but i go under effects and "hard limiter" is nowhere to be found under that section now. wtf? why did it disappear? help? |
Teresia Janusch 12.12.2012 | i tend to use a compressor to smoothen out the levels, though im anal about levels (day job > broadcast engineer) so theres usually not much to change |

Jolynn Schroyer 11.12.2012 | Is the program still available? Audacity? When I google it and click the link it doesn't load. |
Aundrea Lenore 11.10.2012 | Ignore my previous post. The Audacity tutorial covered it. |
Celine Surico 11.10.2012 | Ozone 5 is nice. PSP Vintagewarmer is nice. Ouch, those were my two secret ingredients in my final mastering recipe. |
Aundrea Lenore 11.10.2012 | Great thread! Just curious if anyone has a source, article, tutorial, etc regarding optimal recording settings for Traktor???? I'm not sure if I'm doing everything correctly. I still have mixes coming out on the quiet side. I want the end product to be an optimal sounding 320 kbps mix. Here's a rundown of my settings. Record out from external mixer (Xone:22) to Audio 10. +3 Db on Traktor's gain Now this is where I'm unsure. Do I know import the .wav to Audacity, bump the DBs, export as .wav and then convert to 320 mp3 using iTunes? I feel like this is incorrect. Also, I have the free version of Audacity and can only export as a .wav. I apologize if this has been covered already. Thanks for any replies! |
Tamela Batara 26.02.2012 | WOW. Some of you guys really go to town with this stuff. Personally I just record in audacity through my laptops line in at the moment, so maybe I should make a small investment to try to increase the quality of my hardware, might make a good start. I use Audacity already for recording the rec out on my mixer. As for burning cd's, and spitting tracks, I generally leave the original file as it was recorded / output, then make up a simple cue sheet with tracks and start times. This then burns the wav / mp3 to the cd as a single file, but as far as the cd reads in any cd player, you can skip to whatever points you previously decided in the cue sheet. That said, I haven't burned a cd in about 6 years, so the process might have become a bit simpler since then. |

Clarine Mrowiec 04.02.2012 | Here's a new tutorial on EQing (beginner level) from Kannamix (and myself, sort of). I've done the editing in 1080, so if you go fullscreen it's basically a 1:1 capture of his screen. Feedback and input is appreciated! This is the first in a series of 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGwKIUSkg_4 |

Latoria Kavulich 10.11.2011 | nice little tutorial i found for audacity users. |
Latoria Kavulich 06.11.2011 | Each to his own mate, personally with the stuff i play (progressive trance, psytrance etc) i will try and fit 15-16 tunes in an 80 min mix, which gives each tune a good 4 1/2 minutes of clear unmixed space. Obviously with styles such as D & B, Dubstep and such you may go through a lot more tunes in the same time. Just experiment and see what sounds good to you. There are no definitive rules for this stuff |
