How many of you can read music?
Posted on: 27.01.2010 by Verona Fashbaugh
Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys can read music? The only reason I can is because I used to play guitar and pushed myself to learn it.

Additionally, do you guys know anything about music theory.... key signatures, scales, chord structures, etc?

I'm no pro at it all, so this isn't meant to rub my ego. Just curious.

I read music to a certain extent. I started out on piano before quitting in grade 6 to play guitar ever since, so i largely read tab more than anything these days but i still remember how to read standard notation and all the theory that went along with it.

Its def been useful in terms of production i'd say. Not totally necessary i dont believe, but its a great base to know how music theory works. More so than anything its studying song structures and the parts of songs that has been the most useful.

haha i used to be able to when i used to play trumpet.. back in primary school and beginning of highschool... but then i discovered house music.. tried to play funky trumpet tunes with basic house songs (daft punk) and then discovered the old logic before it was gay and could only be used on even gayer macs j/j

now if you gave me a sheet of music i would look at you strange and then start humming a tune

Hey! I can play guitar (or I used to be able to) and I can NOT get a grasp on Guitar Hero. But I will sing in Rock Band all day! lol.

hahaha. Thats an achievement right there...

But seriously, I have confidence in you. Go give guitar hero another shot, you hit that up on expert in no time!

I have been scratching records & beat juggling since 1996. I got a recording arts degree in 2003. I understand song theory and signal flow in any professional studio. As far as reading music I understand EGBDF & FACE. I can play London Bridge on the keys and beat guitar hero (on easy).

I was a chorister in a Cathedral choir, and last May I failed my ATCL on trombone by 2 marks (gutted)

But yeah, i can read music - play piano, sing, bass, guitar etc ( pretty average at most of them though!). I play the trombone pretty well, touring with my band (in a very english band geek way) to Hong Kong on Wednesday to open their New Year! going to be interesting..

well, definitely not 'cool' but i've been in a cathedral choir for 12 years (i'm 21), and now getting paid for it. i'd say i'm fairly competent in music theory etc

Hi.
I believe that learning music is hard compared to singing.

I've played guitar for 8 years and took lessons for 5 years, although I don't play so often anymore, and I studied classical music in high school pretty intensely. So yes, I can read music and know theory, and I've definitely found my training useful for producing so far.

4 semesters of theory, and piano. As well as classical and jazz guitar lessons to get my Associates in Music and Fine arts. Then i transferred to the University of Memphis working on my Music Industry and Recording Technologies degree. Still taking classical guitar as of now.

I used to be able to read music quite well honestly. I played the Flute, Tuba, Harmonica, Bass Guitar back around high school. Just about 7 years out now, and I honestly haven't picked up an "instrument" or had any need to read sheet music since. I did get into the junior and senior districts playing Tuba, so I was fairly decent.

That being said I've /always/ messed around with music production itself. I actually took a summer "camp" on MIDI in Cakewalk Express when I was in High School. Probably one of the most interesting classes I ever took.

The reason why I liked it opposed to a lot of the other software out now is that you could actually write in sheet music and the midi notes would play. That's what honestly kicked off my want to make more, other than really getting into EDM at the time as well.

I've bumbled around on FL for awhile, but honestly dislike it. I'm now getting into Reason and Ableton and finally being able to put some stuff together.

But still? I wish more of these programs did have a way to write to sheet music. I can read it, I can write it... or least I used to be able to... but I have no real reason to anymore. It's honestly a bit depressing :P

i am total unmusical.. never played an instrument and hated music lessons in school!

i know how to create the music i want to create however and it works like a charm. : )

I was also a band geek, and play multiple instruments. The only ones I'm comfortable reading while playing with are flute, guitar, piano. Honestly, I'm more of a play by ear kind of person, and its a lot easier for me to hear something once and play it back without the music in front of me, than to read it and then play whats on the page before hearing it. I'm not huge on the music theory, but I know my scales pretty well (mostly through muscle memory), and I use the circle of 5th/Camelot wheel sometimes while mixing or learning a song.

i can read it .. but not fluently .. like all the funky syntax means that i need to spend quite a bit of time parsing ..

Never played an instrument (well, I tried the guitar for some weeks but lost interest quickly). I'm teaching myself theory as I go.

Played piano for 7 years. Also played percussion in the school band for 5 years(I know I was a band geek)

I found it has helped me alot, from basic theory and just having a musical instinct at a young age.

Nearly exactly the same as weltraumpapst but starting with the Tenor sax and only 14 years playing. Don't play anymore, but still read music and remember most of the theory.
