Channelling Chaos in Cubase, N(o)u end o' Confusion!

Hi,
Is there a way to add virtual instruments in Nuendo/Cubase, without having the vsti output channels displace the I/O channels in both the mixer and "generic remote device" setup page? I want to keep audio, midi, and vsti, channels in separate banks. As regards vstis, what is required is a "space" for them, where their number may vary, without throwing midi control assignments into disarray. I have googled this and there isn't anything relevant, so I'm probably missing something obvious. I would rather not have to set up templates for each and every vsti configuration. Thank you.
