Recommend me a sound card and Synth

Hi guys,

So, after playing with the demo for a month, I have purchased Live 8. I am a total newb when it comes to producing, but I am having fun learning, working with tutorials etc. At the minute I am using my macbook's internal soundcard through a pair of studio monitor headphones. Could you recommend me a decent soundcard that isn't too expensive? (I also DJ using Traktor with my VCM100's internal soundcard - could I use that for now?)

Also, as I couldn't afford Ableton Suite at the moment, I have no virtual synths. From all I have read, everyone recommends learning your gear inside out and so I intend to buy 1 VST and really go to town on that. What would you recommend? One of Abletons synths or something like NI's massive?

Sorry for all the Q's and thanks for your advise.

I'm not a big fan of VST's. I usually record directly into Ableton with a Korg Radias and an Alesis Micron.(Would love to cop some real analogue when I could afford it which won't be anytime soon.) However, I have a friend who has countless Virtual Synths (Not necessarily legitimately acquired.) and he swears by Nexus and Nexus2. It's absolutely packed with sick trance/house/electro patches(If thats your thing?)with plenty of customizable parameters. However, it definitly breaks the bank. (2-400, somewhere around there, I wouldn't know. You should definitly check out www.gersic.com though, it's a free plugin/vst database, and yes it's legal, people make their own and submit them. I couldn't reccomend you a particular one, but there's thousands.

Decent inexpensive soundcard? I bought an M-audio fast track pro at Best Buy for 200$ and it's pretty solid. If you ran the RCA out's of your vestax into it's two inputs you could use all of Ableton's effects to add to your mix, lot's of possibilities there.(If you had a controller or control surface of some kind.) You could at the very least assign effect on and off switches to your keyboard for some cool stuff.
