fl studio?
fl studio? Posted on: 13.06.2010 by Nikki Mcpeek so i decided that instead of wasting 4,000 in a whole dj gear
setup. djm800, cdj1000mk3s, speakers etc. that i should start learning how to produce music instead so i have been curious if fl studio is a program that doesn't require any gear in order to produce music correct? so i'm believeing of buying it here - https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php - but curious if the most expensive one for 300 bucks is the one that includes all of below that option such as the producer edition, fruity and express correct?i read an interview from one of my favorite dj's that i can't remember his name, but he does A LOT of gigs around europe. and he said in the interview, "dj's who don't produce, become extinct." so i have decided to get into producing and then down the line get my xone 92, djm800 and those goodies while i make songs. so back on top bout fl studio? | |

Keeley Hargus 29.06.2010 | Basically FLStudio sounds crap only if you use the built-in synths and whatever. However, some good purchases such as Rob Papen's stuff or the digital version of Arturia's minimoog will do wonders to your sound. All you gotta do is get your grips around the program and learn all of its intricacies. Took me long enough! |
Xavier Emanuels 23.06.2010 | FL studio is an absolutely wicked DAW, anyone who says it sounds "bad" doesnt know they are on about, heaps of really top level producers use FL studio and i use it too But not just because some big names use it, because its really powerful ! I love the modulation and automation system the most, i cant live without that sort of automation. I have tried producing in Ableton ago but i just cant bring myself to do it, its such a painfully horrid workflow for me in comparison to FL studio, not to mention the automation system is probably the worst i have seen in a product that big. The latest version is very very nice, i talk about the improvements here - http://www.djranking s.com/community /showthread.php?t=7236 Cant recommend FL studio any more, if someone wants to produce i always points them to FL studio. |
Latanya Thakur 22.06.2010 | Guys, I completely agree - FL STUDIO is a very nice product. I've been using it since FL3 and now use 9. It is very user friendly, well priced program and you can shape it to your requirements. All I would say is that good sound-card and a set of decent monitors would vastly improve FL performance. Any program is just a tool in your hands, and only you can make it work or not. P.S; I've read somewhere that Deadmau5 uses FL Studio and as we all know, his sound is awesome. So everything is down to us! Be creative and you will win! |
Leontine Falch 18.06.2010 | haha Fruity Loops gets No Love in the industry - but you stack Fruity Loops with NI Komplete and my friend - you can make top level music with a mouse - A Mouse! I also use Sonar which as some amazing VST's for recording vocals, but when I need to just get ideas out, fruityloops never lets me down |
Ashirumatic DJ 16.06.2010 | you can use you computers keyboard as a piano to say while in the piano roll up by the transport controls you there is a small Piano Icon, just select that if it is not already and you are set. |

Verona Fashbaugh 15.06.2010 | I'd recommend this bad boy: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Akai-Pro...90-i1470752.gc It'll run you about $70, and if you live near a Guitar Center you can buy it there (meaning you don't have to go through the hassle of ordering it) I used to own one and it worked just fine with FL. |
Nikki Mcpeek 15.06.2010 | is there a mini keyboard i can use for fl studio 9. looking for some vid tutorials and it looks like it would be useful to have one. but is there an affordable one that would get scanned automatically or do they still require config? and whats the lowest price i can get for one that does the job? |
Ashirumatic DJ 14.06.2010 | I really like FL's "don't limit windows to screen" option as well. However now on my iMac and 13" MBP I have that functionality with Logic. I really the ability to use Expose and Spaces to orginize my Mixer, Piano Roll etc as well as the ability to switch up screen sets with a push of a button. Windows would do well to develop something along those lines that is built right into the Shell rather then the 3rd party options there are. Still my favorite part of FL are all the internal controllers. Especially the Formula Controller! |
Joette Stazzone 14.06.2010 | Another smart thing about several screens is that FL Studio used a loose interface. In that way i can have the playlist in one screen, the beat pattern and library in one, the mixer in another and so on.. That really smooths up the work. Now im on a 13" MBP so the Ableton interface is just awesome for that, but if you got space, FL Studios loose interface works like a charm. I actually prefer that to Ableton in some ways. But anyways, FL is good. Good luck! |
Ashirumatic DJ 14.06.2010 | Other Artists who use FL to produce Music include: AC Slater Laid Back Luke Benga Steve Duda 9th Wonder Toby Emmerson just to name a few |

s, but anywayz.. FL Studio is a good program for productions, but sadly it does not work on MAC. So if your getting a MAC in the future, its a no good. I recently bought myself a MBP, and i used FL Studio before so now im converting to Ableton juzz because i cant use FL on MAC. Such a shame. People are often complaining about FL for the wrong reasons. Dont let em get to you, i didnt. I strongly recommend FL Studio if you are sticking to Windows, its a good program and really easy to get used to. Nice interface and easy functions. If you (or anyone else) would like to hear music made in FL Studio you can check out my tunes @ myspace.com/joelliljekvist or juz take a look at for example, Basshunter or listen to Deadmau5. There are more powerusers that use FL Studio as their main program. In the end, the best bet would be to just use it for yourself and make your own desiciton. Pz! |
Nikki Mcpeek 14.06.2010 | well even if it sounds badd, fl studio has soo many plugins/programs that i guess can change the way something sound, so basically i wud listen to one of my favorite tech house and just try to make it sound like that playing around with all of its plugins. umm the bible i have is for 8th edition and only goes up to 46 pages lol. i mite have to buy it if i dont find it anywhere. and just sit back and learn the basics then use that knowledge to wonder off. i believe i also found another tutorial which looks very interesting and that has a lot of pages too but only can see 30. and talks about every plugin and how to use it. so i just gotta find these tutorials and do 2-3 chapters a day and i should be fine. although i feel like jumping right into it,- im trying to calm that down cause i know that is what causes one to feel its not working out. so they rage quit lol. but with patience, good things will come rite ;] oh and the fl studio bible i was looking at is for 8th edition, and i got the 9th edition so things do look different. but has helped a lot, up to the 3rd or 4th chapter now. each chapter takes like 40min or something just reading. im gonna find 9th bible and buy that, its like 20-30 bucks and im sure its worth it well i have the 8th edition full here http://www.scribd.com/doc/25973137/F...e-Manual#page9 so i might use that till i have money to buy the 9th and that would be better since everything will be the same. |
Joni Stos 14.06.2010 | Don't give up, learning to produce good music will take years. For me it was really helpful to team up with more experienced producers so you learn faster. But remember not to give up if your songs sound bad the first year(s). Good luck en most of all have fun |

Nikki Mcpeek 13.06.2010 | well i have the fl studio bible and that is 718 pages so ill stick to this for the time being. got lots to read ;] like 718 pages lol |
Ashirumatic DJ 13.06.2010 | FL Studio is a great program. The stigma that other people using other DAW's comes from its cartoon look as well its previous moniker "Fruityloops". I started using FL.Studio back in version 3 and have seen that program flourish into an almost one stop shop for production. The possibilities that it has are fairly endless! Some of my favorite features are virtually every knob is able to be automated, not unlike most DAW's but the part I like is the array of Internal controllers at one disposal. Namely the Peak and Formula controllers are two I use quite often. I really dig the FPC as I have an M-Audio Trigger Finger and like to use those in conjunction. The amount of internal Instruments and Effects are great as well, all of which are pretty easy to figure out and use as well. The only part I did not like about FL are the Stock samples that it comes with are not that great. Thats easily remedied by adding in your own samples from other loop/sample packs etc... The best feature is once you buy it, its free for life! Unfortunately I have stopped using FL myself, not because I was displeased but rather moved onto the Mac environment and there is not a version for us Mac guys. If you choose Fl.Studio as your route check out this website as it will get you started on the basics to some advanced techniques War Beats (Fl.Studio Tutorials) I believe there might even be a discount coupon on that site for the program as well. |
Kassie Kutt 13.06.2010 | FL Studio is brilliant! It aint about what you use, its about how you use it and people who wanna look down on FL Studio are idiots. If you just starting out you dont have to splash out on the signature edition, you can always upgrade. I've had FL Studio since FL3 (basic edition) and I've upgraded as I've learnt new techniques etc, you can buy new pluggin's etc as you go, you can also get a lot of good freewear pluggins to if you hunt around - try kvraudio.com. Also I'd recommend warbeats.com as a good place to learn about FL Studio, its a Hip-Hop focused site but the guy who runs it, NFX, makes good tutorials, he actually tries to give knowledge rather than just showing off like most people who make tutorials. You'll find his tutorials on youtube to, also acepinter and spyro have made some good fl studio tutorials that are on you tube. |
Nikki Mcpeek 13.06.2010 | yeah i believe you guys are right because i have grown up through high school and college. im 24yrs now. and learned that fl studio was all about for noobs and stuff. and then 3 weeks ago i heard a tech house song that was made with what i believe fl studio because i remember some of the voices it included in fl studio back when i was trying to use fl studio to make raggaeton beats(latin music) during early high school but i wasnt exp and didnt know about "tutorials" or ways to learn how to use it. but now ever since i have gotten into house music. i just wanna get into it. but yeah after hearing that tech house song, i was like wow, fl studio can do this then damn, and i bet the reason fl studio best package cost 299 is because fl studio themselves know the reputation they have and so why they must charge a lot less. because if they were to read about people like you two, sj03w4t & Lambox, i'm sure they would be charging a lot more for their program. but they don't. so anyways i will give it a try, i should buy the complete pack in about 2months, i'm goin to buy first the fl studio 9 bible for 30-40 bucks and get a headstart reading the book. i will try to learn the book and the prog inside out and then around then try to make a tech house track and see how that goes. i also notice at that website.... "EXTRA PLUGIN/INSTRUMENTS" for sale in many different pachages, what are the benefit of buying each of those packages? |
Jayne Yellowhair 14.06.2010 | FL Studio is really awesome, I love it. It's intuitive and easy to use, but you can make it as complex as you want/can, really. Lambox is right about the 'prejudice'. And no, you don't NEED gear to produce (except from good headphones/monitors) but I'd advice you to get a small midi keyboard. I swear, it's just MUCH easier to play on a musical keyboard than on the laptop/pc keyboard.4 Yeah, some dj's say you must produce in order to stay on top of the game, and honestly I believe this is quite true. Just look at the best DJ's from nearly any genre: they all produce themselves. Armin van Buren, tiesto, carl cox, dj jean, you name 'em |
Verona Fashbaugh 13.06.2010 | I have always used FL to produce, and I have always been happy with it. To answer your question, no you don't need any gear other than the program to produce with FL. However, you really don't need any gear to produce in a lot of other DAWs, too. And yes, the signature package includes the producer edition. I have always used FL. The problem with it is that a lot of people who use other DAWs look down on and/or talk shit to people who use FL, because a lot of the people who use FL are noobs at producing and produce bad music and have created a bad rap for it. Just like anything else... If you decide you wanna learn to use FL, stick to it! |
