Converting production into a live performance?
Posted on: 02.06.2011 by Lianne Heaverlo
I am a producer and I have a library of tracks that I have produced. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to convert these tracks, in Logic, into a live performance. Should it be done by creating loops and using Traktor S4 or through ableton and so on? If anyone has any suggestions please share.

the best thing to do is to either bounce out loops of individual tracks from logic and build a giant loop based mixing set or import your tracks as a whole and cut up their arrangements in live.

I chose the loop/layer based approach and then added decadance so I could throw down songs at random without the ableton prep work.

This is how I approach it:

I'm working on a live show right now with my band and I'd say traktor 2 has some good options for live performance using cue points and multiple decks. You could have a breakdown section of the song where the normal synths cut out and you play back some crazy stuff (syths, sound effects, acapellas, whatever works with your song) using an extra deck cue points, and the effects. Then sample that with the loop recorder, drop it into a sample deck, mess it up more, build it up into a transition w/ FX, then drop the next section with another cue point on the main track deck. Of course maybe ableton is better suited for your type of music, but if you've already got traktor there's definitely enough depth in there to get a cool performance going on ESPECIALLY if you can produce.

Good guidance, thanks for the vids, on my way.

Render stems.

Import into Ableton and warp.

Rock out.

It's more complicated than that in practice, but that's kind of all you need to do.

Cool, I will check it out. I know ableton has the full version and the add in vst version as well. Thanks.

It depends how how you are planning to play out live, what controller(s) you have and so on.

Are you planning to just be launching audio clips? Are you going to have midi clips triggering drum racks/VSTs? Do you want it so you can jump around, or are you going to have your playlist all laid out and ready to go?

In any case, Ableton is your best choice by far. And it should take that long, just export all the parts of your tracks from logic as loops, and then just drop them into Ableton.

Looking for a little more, like if I use that program what length of time will I have to spend to convert into loops or parts, is it worth the time, etc.

Any help is appreciated. Just trying to see if I should not just DJ with my music but integrate the production/live element as well. I have taken parts and samples and used them in the S4, but I know others might have better ways of taking on this endeavor.

ableton is usually considered to be the best thing to use for a hybrid production/DJ performance. More flexibility than Traktor or other DJ programs for rearranging loops and samples on the fly.
