New project/concept for those who produce and perform using Ableton
Posted on: 27.06.2011 by Breana Singerman
I was talking to a friend today and he said he was believeing about getting into DJing with Ableton. Now let me say he's been DJing with Traktor for awhile now and is doing some good stuff with it and I mentioned how DJing with Ableton would feel very cumbersome, UNLESS you you get into micro DJing ala Speedy J and Chris Liebing. Instead of mixing track A into track B, you are mixing the individual parts of the tracks and creating a whole different experience.

The problem with this he said is there isn't very much material out there to do this with. But I countered with, "How many unfinished projects/loops do you have laying around?".

Just believe about it though, all those unfinished projects/loops are potential tracks to use when playing out. No need to do an arrangement as you'll be doing it on the fly.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. Based on where you are in a lineup, or how you are feeling the crowd, you can take that jacking house loop lets say, and only play the bare bone parts and dub it out into something for earlier in the evening. And the opposite is true as well, you can take a deep house track, add a few more parts, swap out that warm sine wave bassline for something a bit more aggressive and you now have something for later in the evening when the party is going proper.

Now this is where you guys come in. Would all you producers out there be interested in swapping your loops with each other so we all can have more material to source from? Include the raw audio loops as well as the midi note loops for people to build on and create something familiar but original to how they perform?

Sure, as long as it's easy to find. Tags are nice as you could do a search across all of SC to find such entries.

I am trying to make a website for this "file sharing" but i have some difficulties. I know how can be build it BUT i don't know how to build it...i know some basic things. So i asked to a web designer and he asked me max 6000 euro to build it. I (of course) refused but i'm trying to find someone who knows how to build a complex website.
If i can't do the website i'm going to open a new soundcloud account or just a soundcloud group....or while i am looking for someone who can help me i can collect loops on soundcloud!

You could group the loops in to keys using the camelot system maybe? That way when mixing you could drop loops (either using ableton or the sample decks?) that where in key with the song your playing?
So you could group songs in terms of type, genre, bpm and key?
If some kind of rating system was involved as well then you'd have the potential for something really useful that could help spicing up your live sets.

Legendary knowledge so you actually know where to look when building songs:

There are only 12 keys, and each key is like a box of crayons, from each box you can draw the 7 crayons(notes/chords) in it(but you usually just leave the 7th behind unless you're doing classical music or horror film soundrack).

If at any certain point you get stuck and don't know where to go... just look at the key you've been using and use the crayons that you like, draw the ending, or intersect the parts.

Without knowing this it seems like there's an infinity of chaos and song writing becomes sort of impossible. But once that is sorted out you can actually start writing and wonder why nobody had taught you this before.

You just need to google for notes and chords in the key of "X" and find what there is... cause it's not that hard to actually finish the song but it feels like doing school homework when you actually need to go to theory.

This sounds awesome! I'm just starting to get into production after djing for a while, so this could hopefully teach me a few things and set me on the right track! Got loadsa ideas already! Like the idea of using the playing with the loops in ableton but having traktor there for the full songs if I fancy!

i have a server with space, we could just have some sort of site we go to to download new files, even better we can use yousendit and post a link so everyone can download the midi files

Seems like we could just make a dropbox and give everyone access to it.

Now that I believe of it, how would that work for midi files?

Actually what we could do is to agree on a special Soundcloud tag for these. Then we all could upload and tag the entries based on this concept. Soundcloud takes care disk space, downloads, searching and so forth. As long as there's a unique keyword/tag.

Let me know and I could upload some stuff, too.

I proposed this same idea on the Ableton Live DJ community 1+ year ago. In other words, instead of making 4+ minute long tracks, we should make smaller parts that could be re-assembled and played, let's say 30 sec + 1 min + 1 min + 30 second parts. That way there's more re-use of the songs. I believe I called them micro-singles or something similar. But this idea didn't have any traction... Most DJs do this by just making loops and saving them (Traktor et rest...)

Cool idea...but i know some guys that already did it. BUT we can do it too...so...we can do it (that's the main idea...). Anyone has to make a database. That would be awesome!

Check out my setup, I never actually left traktor when I started using ableton.

I use both... it's like 5:17 am but I had to show you this stuff... I can go back and forth between ableton live tracks and the other 3 decks.

There's a reason my unfinished tracks are unfinished...

Not sure really how I feel really about sharing my loops, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless.

Remixed pre-alpha's could be a great name for the final release... Maybe I could share some ultraprocessed beatboxes... they are not only unfinished... they are still waiting inside me!

Whyte hit it on the head, it's more than drums. Basslines, synth lines, efx,
riffs, VOX and so on would be shared, and hopefully the midi notes that go with.

I've considered doing something like this with my unfinished projects, before, but I never put any effort into it. I've always thought the idea of never having the same song twice in any set was kinda cool.

I have a lot of loops just laying around that I never really plan on doing anything with. I'm more than willing to post my abandoned loops. If anything I'd just want to see other people complete the ideas I couldn't.

40 projects eh? That's potentially 40 tracks for your live set! And instead of sitting down and making "tracks" all the time, you can just make "tools" for your live sets. Even if it's not the most musical track, or has the most depth you can still make stuff that works into your live set, and then from there develop it into a track

I liked this idea the first time you pitched this idea. Didn't really grasp the potential of it though. When you put it the way you just explained it here, i totally get it.

As of now, i've got about 40 projects laying around unfinished.. only finished 10 of them..

I like this idea.

I've got so many dud projects that I could post up. now to render...

EDIT: Wait, formats and where should we post it up?
