Mixdown question
Mixdown question Posted on: 07.09.2011 by Glennie Hoppenstedt I'm creating a simple house track in FL Studio 10 and I've just got a few simple elements in there at the moment and am just trying to do a mixdown on it to practice.Originally I had the main synths sidechained to the kick drum, and it sounded pretty good. But I came across the problem that it's a lot harder to alter the levels of the tracks in the mixer if they're sidechained. So I got rid of the sidechain and decided to put a sine wave volume automation on the synth instead but I just came across another problem. Of course the automation overrides my volume adjustment in the mixer. How can I still have my sine wave automation on the synth and be able to adjust the overall volume still? | |

Breana Singerman 09.09.2011 | Like I said, I've never used FL so I wouldn't know what an equivalent would be. |
Glennie Hoppenstedt 09.09.2011 | A utility plugin? What do you mean by that? Can that be done on FL? |

Glennie Hoppenstedt 09.09.2011 | Yeah I mean mixing. Ok so now there's two controllers linked to the volume for the main synth in the Step Sequencer (Not Piano Roll). (This means no automation on the mixer volume.) Controller one is a volume automation clip which is on the playlist that slowly fades in the volume from 0 to max over 8 bars. It's mapping formula is simply 'Input' Controller two is set to the peak controller on the kick with mapping formula '1-Input'. But now when the synths starts fading in, the peak controller effect is fucked up because it reaches 0 quicker at lower volumes (like at the start of the automation clip) than if it were at full volume. (like at the end of the automation clip) I don't know how to make it so the volume change caused by controller 2 is proportional to the automation clip volume. The second controller's mapping formula would have to be '(1-Input)*Controller 1 Level', but is that even possible? |
Mirta Follweiler 09.09.2011 | I thought mixdown was only when you actually saved it down to a stereotrack, you're talking about mixing? |
Glennie Hoppenstedt 09.09.2011 | I just discovered multiple automation linking in the channel settings D: I believe I'm on my way now but there's still a problem I'll let you know if I can't fix it... |
Glennie Hoppenstedt 09.09.2011 | At the moment the only way I can achieve what I want is to change the formula of how the peak controller affects the volume which is really impractical. I used to have it set as '0.8-Input' which means the level in the mixer is at 0.8 and reduces whenever the peak controller detects the kick. Say if I want to halve it I would have to change it to '(0.8-Input)/2', but I want to be able to move the mixer volume up and down as I please and this doesn't allow it. |
Glennie Hoppenstedt 09.09.2011 | The Main synth's mixer volume is sidechained to a peak controller on the kick so that it fades on the kick. The kick is 4 beats per bar and the main synth is 8, so the main synth's volume fades every second note. I want to keep this effect on the main synth but I also want it to fade in. So I made an automation clip that fades in the main synth's volume in the piano roll. That worked an achieved what I wanted. But I found that when I wanted to do some leveling in the mixer and turn the overall volume of the main synth up or down, it was already sidechained to the kick so wherever I tried to move it up or down, as soon as I released it, the sidechain would take over again and it wouldn't have changed a bit. I want to have both the fade-in AND the sidechain volume automation, but also be able to lower and raise their overall level in the mixer. I don't want to lose my effects but I wanna still be able to turn it all up or down. Don't know how to achieve it =( |
Breana Singerman 09.09.2011 | What's the problem still? With the 4/4 kick hitting the compressor at a consistent level I don't understand what the problem is? |
Glennie Hoppenstedt 09.09.2011 | I still haven't figured it out =( I've toyed around with ghost sidechains but I haven't managed to fix the problem yet. |

Breana Singerman 07.09.2011 | And when side chaining to the "KiK", I always have a 'ghost' channel with just a 4/4 kick that I mute. Even though it's muted the compressor still sees it. |
Breana Singerman 07.09.2011 | Never used FL, but in Ableton I just put a utility plugin on all my channels and automate the gain on that, so no matter where I set my volume fader at I still have the relative volume automation from the gain |
