Off the beaten path... Posted on: 25.05.2012 by Brock Ricapito I often read in production threads here and on other sites a common piece of advice: strive to be original. Producers asking how to create a specific sound are often encouraged to make something unlike anything else and stop trying to emulate big names. I believe I have been doing this with my music, but now I need some guidance.First off, I have no idea how to classify what I created. It doesn't fall neatly into any genre I know of, or would really stretch the genre definitions to fit in. how would you classify this? http://soundcloud.com/rindigo/streetlights-are-my-escape Another question I have is concerning labels and the potential of getting signed: If I dont know what genre I am producing, and dont know any labels that have a similar sound, how can I go about successfully promoting my music or hoping for the next step up? I should probably follow up by asking how to go about contacting labels without looking completely clueless, but it sort of begs the question... Anyway, thank you all for your feedback. I'm overjoyed that anyone would be willing to pay for it. It's why I would like to someday get signed and make it possible to have it be available for others. | Sylvia Greener 28.05.2012 | Listening to it for the first time I would have classified it as some kind of progressive, atmospheric, dub tech. Nevertheless "electronica" seems to fit quite well either. Great chillout tunes. Could imagine buying it as well. |

| Sharmaine Pellino 26.05.2012 | Hi man, The music is indeed pretty original, but I remember a group playing this kinda music (with vocals) at Rock Werchter (Festival in Belgium). It's pretty experimental, and I believe there aren't many groups / DJ's who create this kinda music. Maybe if you contact labels like Booka Shade's style, more 'dreamy' music they'll listen? I'm not an expert, I'd say i'm very noobish in contacting labels / ... but I like your music, in my opinion it sounds very professional. | Nedra Fresneda 25.05.2012 | My recommendation, as someone that has normally a harder time getting signed because you are not making Beatport top 10 stuff, is STICK WITH IT. This is one of the things that will make you stand out so don't be afraid of being different. You might not get signed instantly when you send demos but you have a much higher chance that the label that does sign it is the proper one and not your average gold digger net label. Regarding genres, I believe it falls under the electronica tag as well. "Items & Things" is the first name that pops out of my head that might be interested in signing this. |

I've been listening to dance music too much recently but this reminds me of the type of stuff I used to listen to a lot more that I need to get back into. It's hard for me to focus on and delve into more than a couple genres at a time though. Stuff like board of canada, early m83, the knife, fever ray, royksopp, the field, etc. You will often see stuff like this in the Electronica section of beatport and the first track might get thrown into the techno category too, also check the chill-out session. Check out Kompakt to get an idea of a label always putting out stuff like this: http://www.beatport.com/label/kompakt/4530 There are a quite a few labels that put out stuff like this kompakt is just the big one off the top of my head and will be a good place to start (though I imagine very difficult to get signed to, along with warp records). Look through the electronica section and try to fine labels putting out similar kind of stuff: http://www.beatport.com/genre/electronica/3/top-100 (check out more than just the top 100 though) |
