Dubstep BPM Question
Posted on: 14.06.2012 by Jerica Salava
I notice that dubstep tracks are sold and labeled as 140 BPM (for example).

When I listen to them they sound like 70 BPM to me. The snare lands on the 2 and 4 beat right ???

Why are they labeled 140 BPM ? What does Traktor/Serato etc. usually analyze them at?

That high 140 BPM sounds strange to me as the beat groove is slow like 70 BPM.

Thanks.

and dubstep can range between 135 (feed me does this) and 145 (skrillex does a couple tracks at 143)...still the concept is the same...most "house" is thought to be 128 and most "dubstep" is thought to be 140...but to humor you ill change what i said

the same reason house is 125-130

in the end the BPM is just a reference tool. and since you can halve or double anything to compensate , it just doesnt matter.
Thank you. i chuckled when i saw that someone posted the snare on 2 and 4 for 70 is a lost art and clearly doesn't understand that 3 at 140 is 2 and 4.

I keep mine at 140. Why? For simplicity. I don't have many tracks around the 60-80 range that I'd be able to mix with if left the dubstep at 70, because at 60 it becomes a little too slow. Since most of my collection is at higher BPM's it's easy to bring the tempo down from 140 and still keep it up beat. Too much work to bring the tempo mid set from 70 to 130, as opposed from 140 to 130

Depends how you beatgrid the song. If it's done for 140 then yes if its 70 then no. I'm confused by your question.

So this is a legit question IMO.

I don't spin dubstep, But you who do just sync everything at 140 BPM ?

Same beat different tempo, demonstrates how the different bpms change the feel.
After each bar the beat goes from 4x4 closer to 2-step halftime

I generally run dubstep at 135ish, so I can mix house and breaks more easily, or eventually get to that point in the mix. The drums are locked into 70bpm, but the rest usually flows at 140. I count drum and bass half time, it is easier for me to deal with tempo wise and I feel the groove better. I don't need to brock out on amens at blistering speeds I need to find the groove, dubstep runs opposite on what I need to find my groove, and mix with other genre.
I'm pretty sure a competent drummer would understand you mean half time to the rest of the orchestration.

nah i believe that came from moombahton. it somehow branched out in dubstep and electro house.

I am not the only one that believes it's ridiculous to set a metronome to 140 BPM and use it as eighth notes. Oh well.

You have everybody's permission to change your library to match, but what a dumb topic to go on this long... I met a producer that made hardcore at 800bpm, needless to say he was a tool making it harder on himself, but same debate and just as pointless...

Either way, who fucking cares for mixing purposes. Half time tunes work great in mixing up the groove of a set. Fucking technerds splitting hairs on whether half time BPM is for real and what BPM it should be labelled? Give me strength.
