Too catchy would you guys agree that it's going to be a instant hit?

Well, the BPM for it is a little bit low but the house loop makes Call Me, Maybe an EDM track. And yes with three chords is one of the most chord-full EDM tracks, too. Actually I forgot the bridge, it has four chords total, even a bridge which is unheard of for an EDM track :-).

A few recent examples..LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem" was available in January, didn't hit until the summer and then rode the wave as the summer anthem. "Sexy and I know It", I downloaded it June, new it was going to be a monster but it didn't hit until November. Obviously the labels space it out to drain every ounce out of a song. Same thing with Rihanna "Where have you been", its popular now, I put it in a mix in January. On the other hand Bruno Mars "The lazy song" when I first downloaded I knew it was a hit and like 3 weeks later it was huge so sometimes even if you know the song is a bona fide hit, its hard to tell when it will happen.

Right now Flo Rida "whistle" is a big hit so I believe they will ride with that for awhile but "I Cry" is going to be massive when it hits.
what do you guys believe??

Regarding "call me maybe", i really don't get it. I mean, in the past, there have been crappy pop songs that i didn't like, but i saw how they could be "catchy". I don't get anything about "call me maybe" and i dont understand why anyone would want to hear it. its just...nothing. oh, well. thank goodness i only heard it for the first time like 2 weeks ago and havent heard it since.

For a song to be a hit, it only needs one of a few different things.

1) Amazing hook - whether it be musically amazing or corny, doesn't matter. Just has to be hooky.

2) Unique or amazing beat.

3) Unique production/sounds. (never before heard synth tones, never before heard vocal trick, etc.)

Look at the Call Me Maybe song, I love it, but the production is so old school and corny, but it doesn't matter because the hook is so good. Which proves my point, a hit only needs one of the above things. If it has all of them, it's a crazy hit but you don't have to and sometimes trying to have it all can ruin what you have. For example, if you have a crazy hooky chorus, it's usually best to play it safe and go with a straightforward production. If your melody is weak, you have to go crazy with all the production to try to make up for it. That's why a lot of electronic music is so technically crazy, because it has no melody or music at it's core, so there is a race to put in the most technical edits and production possible. Look at Dubstep for a good example.

But that Calvin Harris song has none of them. It might get played, but it won't be a hit. I listened to it and I can't re-sing the chorus because I already forgot it. With songs like Call me Maybe or California Girls you can sing along before the song is even over.

BTW, that doesn't mean the Calvin Harris song is bad, I just don't believe it's going to be a summer hit. I do like Calvin Harris but I believe that song has a weak melody, and the production is a little tired and predictable. The standard rising snare build, the repeated last word, etc.

Going back to Calvin Harris' songs sounding like other songs - when he released 'I'm Not Alone', did anyone else believe it sounded like 'Madagascar' by Art of Trance?

Call me maybe works because that hook is devastatingly simple yet contagious.

I can't get over how passive/aggressive it is. "here's my number, so call me maybe" is the oddest damn pick up line ever. Besides that, it's certainly a very catchy pop song with a funny ending to the video. And the sky is the limit, or so I hear.

Yes, check out how bare the production is in Call Me, Maybe. And that's why it works so well.

personally I don't mind it. Calvin Harris has been making this style of music for a while. Its nothing new, its not something that should surprise you. Its the same style hes had and has been doing his mainstream thing for the last 4-5 years.

Its like being surprised of Skrillex making dub or Armin making trance.
