How can I pick up a gig through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
Posted on: 04.08.2012 by Burl Kennick
I am 14 and im yet to pick up DJ gig anywhere. I was wondering if there would be anyone good ways of letting people know that your up for a gig somewhere. The summer is coming to a end and Im pretty sure someone will throw a party soon. I really want to get a gig. That is my next step. I just need some tips. Thanks! DJUSAUS

Update: Before you start reading through all the posts, just know that this has gotten off the topic of getting a gig through social networking.

Indeed, I agree. I would also add that there are loads of radio shows (Essential Mix for one) that give a really good idea of longer sets. I know certainly my first exposure to DJ/Dance Music was via copying mate's copies of tapes (Essential Mix/Selection, Eclipse, Fantazia, Universe, Renaissance etc etc) from the early 90's (well before the advent of mainstream access to the internet). These formed the basis of learning before actually being able to get in to clubs/events and also made people like Sasha gods in my eyes/ears!

A lot of us learnt the oldskool way and dispite the new technologies, still mix the oldskool way.

Anyone who goes to proper house clubs will still see great DJ's spinning in the style they did 20-30 years ago, albeit they might use an X1 instead of a 1210.

What many kids want now is not DJ'ing as we know it - but if that's what kids want then hey-ho.
Very good point, well made.

I've just read the whole thread. It appears to me a proportion of the younger chaps/chappesses coming through see DJing as putting out 5-10min mashups of half a dozen tracks and have probably not had exposure to what is deemed to be a club set i.e. 1hr+ of several tunes blended together to create a musical 'journey' which is the traditional view of DJing IMHO.

For me it's relatively simple (for dance music, club DJing this is): Listen to lots of mixtapes by all sorts of DJs, practice, buy tunes you like, develop a style you are into (not just what is fashionable at the time!), record all your mixes (30 mins+) and listen back, practice basically and in the early days don't worry so much about getting gigs/money/fame - it's cliched but its all about the love of dance music, where it came from, where it is now and developing it. Get involved in the underground clubs/music.

I try to make 2-6 mixes a week just to check them later and internally complain what stupidity I did on them -- anyway better than to do the same stupid mistakes on-stage.

I.e. there's no need to publish every single mix, but it's important to constantly do them and listen to them with a critical ear to correct mistakes. That should keep someone very busy until they are 21 and allowed inside bars (or 18 for you non-US people.)

Don't play the music that other people want to hear in your mixtapes play the music that you want to hear in your mixtapes

what a terrible comment... One kid comes to a community to ask a question and suddenly DJing has become rotten?

I dident really mean it like that. I know all I would have to do to attract some 9th graders is just go on iTunes and download the top 100 songs and just mix them. I know that. I mainly mix Dubstep and House. If im going to mix Pop music then how do i go about that. Most of you guys on here probaly DJ at clubs and all that. You guys probably can play dubstep and house at the club. But with 9th grade its different because people just want to here LMAO and Niki Minaj.

If you don't have at least 2 hours of music on your computer you will fail and you will never be hired again. also if you can't keep your mind on the mix for at least two hours then you will be screwed when you walk into a club and start playing

Your 14 no club promoters will want you. The only gigs you will probably get is a 12 year olds birthday or primary school disco gig

I dont DJ for fame. I dont Dj because i want to be like Skrillex. I have bin DJing in my bedroom for about 6 months and i believe its about time to DJ at a party. Yeah sure you can DJ in your bedroom for the rest of your carrer and have fun but DJ's are ment to go out and perform at partys and clubs and so on... I have fun DJing in my bedroom all the time. I love the music and the energy. But i believe its time for me to get my first gig and take a step outside the bedroom and see what its like.
