WTF Did That JUST happen?

Okay So for new years i agreed to spin at my buddies house party. So i spent a day cobbling up my collection of Club music, the cheesy stuff that the girls like cuz i figure...hell if i keep them happy then the guys will start dancing in hopes to get laid...you know the usual routine.

The evening was going pretty decent...then in the evening i got some of the STRANGEST request i have ever heard.

Rammstein, Du Hast
Landslide by stevie nicks

I honestly did not know what to say....

What are some of the strangest requests u guys have heard.

That whole requesting a band/artist while already playing them happens way too often

Middle aged lady + Speedcore woulda been immense

Similar to mine - I had just played Soft Cell's cover of Tainted Love, Sunglasses at Night and Blue Monday. While Blue Monday was still playing, dim-30-something asks "Can you play something from the 80's?"

srs. WTF?

I love it when I get out the blue requests (especially if you can accomadate them and still keep the party going)

such as a few weeks back I was playing a hard indsutrial/goth/alt evening and a guy came up and asked for Beyonce

I played this straight after and not only did he love it but so did the crowd

I used to play a fetish evening in my home town and that was so much fun as I'd got it to there point where I was not only playing extreme things, I could make extreme jumps too - I could go from Rammstein to Kylie and still keep the dance floor going

I've gotten the request for an artist while it is playing over the PA...Played a lesser known SHM song that I thought was good and got a request for SHM song while it was playing. Ironically the guy making the request was doing windmills on stage.

I usually start off open format evening s with top40 or top40 remixes and ppl make request...don't mind at that point in the evening . Always funny when you have the persons request cued up and about to mix it in and someone is trying to yell at you while you are cueing, then they hear the song come in and go crazy and walk away.

Playing your bog standard top40/house , then someone asks for ABBA. My response to any old song requests is, im 19 years old playing house do you honestly expect me to have an ABBA album,

Also being asked for a song while the song they requested is playing. has happened too many times.

Playing some hip-hop, funk and breaks in a club at about 3.30am and some fella walks up and says, "I'll give you 100 bucks to play The Message by Grandmaster Flash." I would have played it for free, as it fit the evening perfectly, but this guy clearly had more cash than he needed.

Back then I used to play back to back with my partner and the $100 guy came up when I was back in the office and asked for his money back. He got told to piss off.

I'm not sure we always treated our punters as we should.

Shit...I agreed to do a private party over the weekend, for a 40 year old womans birthday.

I am friends with her younger sister etc.

It was supposed to be 80's.

But I was CONSTANTLY asked to play Dance music....then more 80's....then Lenny Cravits...then Rammstein...then She Wolf....

As soon as i put someones request on, someone else came and bitched.

I nicely told them to fuck off away from the DJ booth and enjoy their drinks.....LET THE BIRTHDAY GIRL DECIDE!

LOL

But the kicker was when this guy asked me to back him up.....to play Frank Sinatra....

yeah....so I let him go Accapella and then dropped Nickleback.

I feel so fucking DIRTY right now....

I know this thread's been kinda dead but I just had to post this because I almost died laughing. I just came back from a sweet 16, and the girl asked me to play top40, reggae, and skrillex. All went well, except for at one point a girl came up to me and threatened to sue me because my music wasn't vulgar and she wanted more swearing in the songs. All I could do was laugh

Got a request to play "I'm On A Boat" last summer...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyYyoSswgC0
...while this was playing.

Normally I have a pretty polite, roundabout way of denying requests but I was so caught off guard that my confused response was something along the lines of "What? No. I mean... No."

Oh one thing i that learned at this house party. Since I really hate that top 40 club music...i got togeather some remixes of club songs by DJs i like and decide to use those, instead of the originals. NO ONE in the entire house party knew the difference, i just got girls coming up to me and saying THANK YOU FOR PLAYING MY SONG......in reality...it was just the chorus of the song and a totally new beat.

I really do give too much credit to the crowd believeing that they are actually listening to the music...

This leads me to beleive...if i have samples of voices saying "Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle" or I got moves like Jagger and throw them into whatever song im playing...they will dance..

the crowd that evening was "dark". luckily the place where i was dj'ing at had wi-fi so i downloaded it from itunes. i don't mind downloading music on the fly as long as it gets people dancing. .. 2 weeks later i did another party and some one asked for that same song... i guess i didn't waste $.99
Wobble and Teach Me How to Dougie is not considered strange at the club I DJ at. And no its not a hip hop club. I hate the F'in song, but playing it keeps people happy and drinking.

Probably fine. Lose your age qualms - loads of people like loads of music.

In another thread I said a gay audience was a demanding audience......... pales into insignificance compared to a hen evening (bachelorette party)

"have you got Mandy by Barry Manilow" I got dogs abuse for not having it, same with Queen We will rock you. Trying to explain I was a house music dj got me nowhere

The worst bit of that evening was being asked for Dolly Parton 9 to 5 (the worst bit being I actually found it and played it) They loved it and went on to ask for Sneaky Sound System.

Go figure that one out.

I had a small group of south american girls in the bar once [not too common in central london] who kept asking for latino music or reggaeton. I kept telling them that I didn't have any of that kind of stuff, but I'd try and find something...

So I found one reggaeton tune in my itunes that was fairly suitable and dropped it.
Everyone in the bar was jumping up and down to it, except the girls who requested it.

The people that ask for the tunes NEVER dance to them when you actually play them.

I believe this will be the most epic problem for DJ's, ever, EVER.

There will be always at least one person in crowd who will come and ask something, ALWAYS, and even if you will be in separate booth, they will find the way to make a request, becouse they believe that we are like a jukebox.

Only problem is, jukebox alteast gets something for that

And if you will not make the request 80% your dead
