Ultra DJ's trainwrecking???
Posted on: 23.03.2013 by Meaghan Machold
Is it me, or has anyone who's been watching any of Ultra noticed alot of DJ's trainwrecking. I noticed Tiesto the first week, right now Laidback Luke has trainwrecked about 3 times in 20 minutes... and I def remember some from last week, just can't put a name on it. Makes you wonder/realize that not all producers are set out to be DJs, but theyre paid to go out their and perform cause their songs are famous. Not hating, I'm super jealous of all of em, but theres def been more than a fair share of trainwrecks.

Didn't you just post a video recently on not to hate on DJs?

There was an interview on how he syncs everything together. He's not just pressing play, he's having a signal sent to the light guys that program the lighting accordingly...

I was at Wk 1 so a few notes:
A) laidback luke IS a DJ. And a good one at that. He's been djing for like 15 years. I went to his set and it was awesome, no audible mistakes, and I notice them.

B) the livestreams/recordings suck.

C) the sound techs get tired. During Armin's closing set, the sound tech was pushing the SPL and the delay on the arrays and subs was so off that the bass was hitting you probably 15-20 milliseconds late by the end of his set. Even my non-DJ friends could tell, and we were all out of our minds. It was fucking awful.

D) mistakes happen. Train wrecks are actually a GOOD thing. It means the DJ is earning his pay and not playing some recorded mix. With the way Laidback Luke plays it doesn't surprise me that he train wrecks every now and then.

Although your choice of words tint your point, I believe i can agree to some extent. There are thousands of new songs released per day, it tough to walk through a festival and of the 3 stages and several artists, I've noticed a sort of "safety set" of songs used as intro or outros.

While it isn't expected for every song to mixed, there should be an element of risk in creativity. If you watch live rock/disco/rap shows in person or recorded you'll notice minor errors which add character to the "live" music.

I'm not suggesting we start mixing without headphones and mixing polar opposite music, I'm just suggesting we as DJ's set a trend of fearlessness.

I honestly don't believe it's that bad considering how all these producers are collaborating to produce big hits and remixing each other.

i believe you lot are confusing trainwrecking with clashing when tracks get slightly out of time.
the clashing is acceptable, but i don't want to see DJ trainwrecking

no one wants to hear stuff like this

Yep, its how to handle the fuck ups and fix on the fly.

Thats where the skill and experience comes in.

If its a major one....acknowledge it and laugh at yourself a bit.

No one is perfect...anything can happen.

Deadmau5 only plays his tracks, and he normally only plays his EPs in order. He complains about festivals like hes some kind of god. But even admits he doesnt play almost any of his stuff live at larger shows, he just plays his tracks one after another in Ableton most of the time until his new "game changing live setup" starts being used

So I agree.. his sets have been boring since after the first time I heard him. His music just isnt for me.. and definitely idiotic to put him on main stage. Especially the first weekend, based on who got the shaft on smaller stages because of gimpy Rat boy.

I believe Deadmau5's set got fucked up too. Cause I watched it last weekend, and then im watching it now again and it seems less smooth (maybe cause i was intoxicated?). However, god damn you can hate him all you want but he's an awesome producer and puts on one hell of a fucking show.

Krewella is really a live act. I've seen them live and the energy in the room is always great when they perform. I got to talk to Rainman after the show and he told me they're still working out the live vocals part. I figured they've have had it worked out for Ultra but I guess not.
Yea, Krewella came to my city and their performance is amazing. Just so explosive!

for instance, i respect dillon francis for calling himself out in his set when he messed up. it shows hes honest. and dude, backed it up with a dope set, overall.

YES! this! that was awesome. AND I LOVEDIT! but what i mean by trainwrecking is not little imperfections, but i mean entirely dumb things, like i said, cueing up a song and not realizing the volume on that deck is all the way up, and then turning the volume down, and then bringing the song back in.

but no, the dillon francis mess up was amazing. i loved it. it made me smile to see someone screw up and call himself out and start over.

Its more profitable if they play their own songs live. + They can get giant groups of people to come see them. I definitely can't get thousands of people to come see me play back a tiesto song, but I'm sure tiesto can
