What things should I get as a starting producer?
What things should I get as a starting producer? Posted on: 14.05.2013 by Dylan Kockler Hey, you've probably seen my past threads asking which midi controller/keyboard to buy and might be believeing that these are one of those threads. But thankfully this isnt the case.I've decided that instead of wasting my money getting a piece of hardware that I probably dont need yet wouldnt help me at all if I dont learn the software yet so I've opted out of getting any type of controller until I'm more confident in the software and can figure out what I will need to help my work flow. I've already decided that I'm going to buy Ableton Live 9 Suite as my DAW of choice however the rest of the things I get are up in the air as to the order in which I should purchase them. I do not have the money to get them all at once and would each most likely need a months time before purchasing the next thing. This is where I need your help on which things would be most necessary/useful for me to produce with. 1. Ableton Live 9 Suite ?. KRK Rokit 6 G2 (2 of them) ?. A new desk to use for my workspace (my current one is rather tiny and only about 24 inches long) ?. NI Massive ?. Soundcard (I dont know anything about soundcards nor do I know what do they do or which one to get, help?) ?. Upgrade my laptop to a MacBook Pro After Ableton, what order do you believe I should get the rest of the stuff? Also I need help on the soundcard as I stated earlier in this post. Thanks | |

Also, would 4GB or RAM suffice or is the upgrade to 8GB of RAM worth it? |

Norbert Thysell 16.05.2013 | Get the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros. They sound way better than anything else in there price range. Actually the other option would be the Audio Technica M-50's - a matter of taste and aesthetics really. Go to a store and try them both on. I spent an hour listening to the same 3 tunes on both sets of cans. In fact, the only reason I actually made a decision was because I was going to be late to class hahaha. Getting street-wear headphones will slow your production down. The DT's or the M50's will let you figure out your productions and last you a long time before you get monitors and after. |

Carlee Pickard 16.05.2013 | Personally I believe the SOL's are trash . I don't mean it in a rude way, but that's how I feel about them. That's why I was just recommending other cans. |

Cindie Somoza 15.05.2013 | Where are you located? The AKGs aren't under $200, but the Beyerdynamic's are. |
Dylan Kockler 15.05.2013 | I meant $200 or less, are there better headphones for producing/djing than th Sol Republic Tracks HD at that price range? |

Dylan Kockler 15.05.2013 | Between the Beats by Dre Mixr and Sol Republics Tracks HD which would you recommend? Any other headphones that are better that are less than $300? |

Now, if you want a 13" for portability and to save you some money, that's perfectly fine and understandable but I would purchase a monitor (any that's like at or above 15" will do - pref. larger though) to go along with it. Actually after the desk my next purchase will probably be a 23" monitor to work on. It's just an easier way to work. Edit: I also was leaning towards the 15" MBP cause I was at the time DJ'ing with Traktor, and fuck DJ'ing on a 13" screen. |

To be honest, they're completely correct. I am actually looking for a desk now as well, it's highly reccomended to get a desk where you can fit at least a 49key keyboard infront of you and work comfortably. If you don't have monitor stands, you should definitely get a desk that fits that need as well. I am planning on getting -> (it's marked down to $230 in store) http://www.guitarcenter.com/Studio-T...06-i1919621.gc And as for MacBook Pro, i've never produced on anything except the MacBook Pro (First was the early 2011 version and now it's the MAcBook Pro Retina 15'). I love it, I have no problems, it's rare that my CPU gets overloaded, and I always keep everything in MIDI while having the VSTs run as well - so im using a lot of CPU. Hope this helps. |

Dylan Kockler 14.05.2013 | So can someone recommend me a good low price soundcard? Also when it comes to the Rokit monitors what are the difference in number? (Ex: Rokit 6's or Rokit 's) Should I get a good desk early on? How early? Also what about the Macbook Pro question |

Dylan Kockler 14.05.2013 | Which MacBook Pro would you guys recommend? MBP 13" 2.9GHz or MBP 15" 2.3GHz The brand new models you'd find on the Apple website |

Augustina Zulu 14.05.2013 | If you don't already have them I would also suggest a decent pair of cans. Most home studio folks I know arent able to properly condition the studio area and being able to fall back to headphones for details can be really helpful. The order you buy things depends on your priorities. If you're just learning the software and don't mind creating a few dozen throw away tracks go for software first and just listen on whatever you have and play around. When youre trying to mix down a final track is when you absolutely need proper monitors. |
Efrain Scharr 14.05.2013 | For the OP in order of importance. Upgrade the Computer DAW Soundcard Monitors Soft Synths 25 Key Midi controller Maschine - last only because you are new to producing.. if you knew what you were doig I would place the Maschine above the VSTs |

Evia Nitch 14.05.2013 | Massive is JUST a software synth. Yes, it woks very well, but there are more. Ableton allready has lots too. Massive is very tightly integrated with maschine. (Maschine packs contain lots of massive sounds). If you decide Maschine will be your synth of choice, Maschine is a very nice controller for it. |
