Got Shot Outside My Residency
Posted on: 18.05.2013 by Harold Jaras
i used to post here on DJTT heavily in 08-09, but as i moved away from controllerism and began to forge my own path and become involved in my local scene, i gravitated away. however, i know this community is filled with up and coming & established DJs that are hungry for knowledge and generally good people all around. i bring this story to you not as a beggar, but as a fellow DJ/producer who has struggled for years to build something out of nothing, and is now facing a pivotal moment in my life.

i was caught in the crossfire of a robbery that took place across the street from my residency last wednesday evening in ATL. as i type this i'm laying in a hospital bed at Grady Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right side of my back. it knicked my lung, fractured a rib and stopped inches from my heart. statistics say i shouldn't be alive. the doctors words were "incredible". i'm going on day 3 of my stay here, which has included a chest tube (to clear fluid & air from the area around my lung), multiple x-rays & CT scans, pain meds, etc. i'm looking at a bill in the 10k's..

i've devoted the last 6 years of my time & money, literally everything, into making this my career. i dropped out of state college to go to SAE institute and get a degree in audio technology in 2010. since then i've been freelancing as a mix/mastering engineer, sound tech, dj, beat maker, etc. i literally scrape by day to day, but would have it no other way as i LOVE what i do. i truly do.

as you may have already guessed, i have no health insurance, and i fear this hospital bill could ruin me. if you were to ask anyone that knows me personally, they would tell you i HATE asking for help. i'm very stubborn when it comes to supporting myself. i don't even like bumming cigs from people. it's just how i was raised. i feel as though i have no other option in this situation however, i don't expect anything but have to try, you know?

anything helps, and it would mean more than you could possibly imagine, i swear it will come back to you and i do NOT easily forget those who go out of their way to help me. i'll even master tunes/mixes at a discounted rate if you'd like.

One thing....did it hurt mate?

Did you know what had happened, once you were popped?

OR did you find out after?

Sorry if thats personal or a touchy subject....I know I would be a bit traumatized, so don't answer if you don't wanna mate.
i appreciate your consideration but it's been long enough where i can talk about it pretty easily (still sitting in the damn hospital bed though.. hoping to get out today). i was always curious as to what it felt like to get shot so i'm happy to entertain your curiosity. i remember it feeling like a stronger version of a paintball/airsoft/bb gun shot. and it was "hot" feeling. but it's super fast so not really painful right when you get hit. i got really lucky and it missed my major organs/ bones for the most part (knicked a lung & fractured a rib), so really what i experienced was just the slug going through muscle tissue. but when it hit me i was running inside and i remember immediately falling forward to the ground, and instantly knowing i had been hit. adrenaline kicked in and no sooner was i on the ground than i was scrambling back to my feet and out to the back patio of the club (away from the gunfire). i saw one of my friends and was frantically telling them to check me. one guy was like "nah you're good" but i knew. i slid my hand all over my back and brought it around and there was blood and my heart dropped. another friend said "looks like you just got grazed" so i took off my shirt to have them make sure and that's when we saw the puncture. i knew how bad shock can be in situations like that so i tried my best to calm myself down, had a friend apply pressure to the wound and wrap a shirt around my torso. i felt a little better after a minute went by and i wasn't feeling dizzy or the pain increasing rapidly. it was only after about 5-10 min the REAL pain started setting in slowly, but at its worst just felt like i had gotten whacked in the back side of the ribs real hard with a bat.

really the worst pain was getting the chest tube put in :shiver:

thank you all for the kind words, it means a hell of a lot to have support from guys in the same field.

every minute since this happened i've had an overwhelming sense of relief/happiness/humbleness that i got to be so lucky as to survive something so random. the odds were against me, as they are against all of us every day.

thanks again guys

If there's a positive here then it's that you're still alive. Try and focus on that rather than worry about the financial aspect for now.
Hope you manage to access some kind of funding mate.
If the current government get their way over here in the U.K then I fear we could be in a similar situation some time soon.

Dubluw and Johnny are always classless.

Anyways, this sucks man. Being a DJ in Philly, I've done some shady spots in north Philly. Every once in a while, locals get in the mix and cause issues. Just last month there was like a weird hostage situation in the bathroom. I feel your pain man. I worry about getting shit in north Philly all the time. I'm sending you $20 when I get home.

Obama has had such resistance for his healthcare reforms, and you get the lovely gun lobby folks who feel it is against their human rights to toughen up gun laws. Great isn't it.

That's pretty much the worst part of living in the US, someone else fucks you up, and nobody takes care of you. Nice health care system...

That being said, good luck with the recovery! I hope they have a fund for victims as yourself because this story is sickening

be sure to ask the hospital itself about charity/financial options. hospitals will often cover stuff like this themselves for people in certain situations whether it was being a victim of a crime or not.

there are a few programs to help out if you're a victim of a violent crime, but they only cover so much, so every penny helps honestly. hospitals are notorious for being RIDICULOUSLY expensive for even the smallest of things.

thank you all for the advice.

Sick that you have to pay the hospital bill when you got shot, even if you shot yourself you shouldnt have to pay anything.
USA supposed to be a world leading country and can't even take care of its citizens, I would be ashamed to take money for helping someone in such dire need.

Man that is like a kick in the ribs, bad enough getting shot in the first place and then you have to stress about paying the doctors as well
